Steven Spielberg's next film will be 'Harvey'

Categories: Uncategorized

According to Variety, Steven Spielberg has decided his next project will be an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Harvey, which also was the subject of a 1950 film starring Jimmy Stewart. Harvey focuses on a man and his friendship with a six- foot-tall invisible rabbit. The new film will be based on a screenplay by author Jonathan Tropper (This is Where I Leave You).

So I’m guessing it will be Tom Hanks playing the lead then?

    • theJuanStar

The first name that popped into my head was Tom Hanks.

I don’t see a single actor out there who could touch Jimmy Stewart. It’s would be embarrassing to even try. I’d like to see the ego of the actor who thinks he can. I don’t understand why the great Mr. Spielberg would even want to touch a classic film like Harvey. Are there no new stories to tell? I think opening the door to remaking wonderful classic films is dangerous. Maybe one day a director will think, “Hey, I’d like to take a crack at remaking Jaws. Or Minority Report.” Which is absurd because those films are perfect. Just like Harvey is perfect the way it is. With the greatest respect, please don’t do this.

Not sure how I feel about this. Harvey is such a classic, and it’s hard to imagine anyone other than Jimmy Stewart in the lead. Hope it turns out well.

    • yeah

I know right? The original was a classic! I mean, James Stewart!!! Come up with some new ideas, Hollywood. This one was already done, and done perfectly!

  • James

I agrre with both of you, but if Tom Hanks does not play Jimmy Stewart’s role, then The movie will probably suck.

  • Strepsi

My mind went directly to Everyman Tom Hanks as well. Although a 20-something version could work with Tom Hanks 2.0, aka Shia Leboeuf. He’s got the same appeal as Hanks and Spielberg lurves him.

I do not agree… Shia LeBarf would be a horrible choice.. I’m with either Tom Hanks or even Will Smith

      • chris

It’s time for Will Smith to retire. He’s the worst thing to happen to cinema.

      • sara

        I agree with chris

      • Jennifer

        I second Chris’ statement.

      • Amy

“The worst thing to happen to cinema”? Really? The Pursuit of Happyness? Men in Black?
Yes, Smith has certainly made some stupid movie choices, but to say that about him is a little over dramatic.

Shia LeBeouf does not and never will have the charm of Hanks. He’s too smarmy and not nearly as talented. If not Hanks, and if steered in a younger direction I wouldn’t mind seeing James McAvoy in the role. He has the charm and talent of Hanks.

      • shell

        James McAvoy would be fantastic.

      • MW

        Yes! James McAvoy!

  • Ryan

    boo. do something original.

  • bobbyman

what about tintin? Is he already done?

  • bas

Don’t cast Shia Lebeouf. I just do not think that he has charisma of Jimmy Stewart. I can not imagine anyone other than Jimmy Stewart in the role.

  • Griff

With the way S.S. has been making movies lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes Harvey an alien or puts in a cgi rabbit and mucks it all up.

  • RayT

Oh God. Does this mean the Liam Neeson/Lincoln movie has been pushed back to 2030?

    • fancypants

LOL! I hope not. But Neeson is supposed to be on board as Lincoln.

  • Tika

What a disastrous idea. With the greatest respect to Mr. Spielberg, why on earth are you remaking a beloved classic??? Harvey was Mr. Stewart’s favorite film and Mr. Stewart is an American Icon; someone truly deserving of that word. And who on earth would step into Jimmy Stewart’s shoes? No one alive that I know of. Surely there must be some new stories for you to tell? This is a terrible idea. How would you feel if someone remade ET? Or Jaws? If you want to remake Harvey does that mean you’ll want to remake Mr. Smith Goes to Washington too?

    • cream rage

Tika you are spot on. What gall and arrogance on the part of Spielberg.
God, Hollywood needs to be destroyed.

  • Rick

For those of you touting Tom Hanks, don’t forget Colin Hanks who seems to have inherited a lot from the old man.

  • Raven

NO! No! No! When will they learn? Leave pricless classics alone! My mind just won’t imagine what a CGI muck up it would be.

  • Pidge

    NOOOOOOOO!
What a fool. It’s perfect as a classic.
    Not happy!

  • TJ

This sounds like a horrible idea

  • steven

Harvey was remade in the late 90s for TV, with the lead from Night Court playing the lead. It was OK. Not the classic.
