SyFy announces premiere date for 'Caprica'

SyFy has set Jan. 22, 2010 at 9 p.m. for the premiere of their new series, Caprica. The premiere will be a two-hour event, but subsequent airings will be in one-hour episodes at 10pm on Fridays. Caprica stars Eric Stolz and Esai Morales as the patriarchs of two competing families.

Prosecutor: Suspect was fleeing police when he hit 'American Idol' contestant

Daniel Bark, 23, of Toms River, NJ has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for the hit-and-run collision that killed former American Idol auditioner Alexis Cohen on July 25the New York Daily News reports. Police say Bark allegedly hit Cohen with his 2005 Mitsubishi Gallant before fleeing the scene. Bail was set at $35,000; Bark faces 10 to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Update: Authorities now say that Bark, the suspect in Cohen's hit-and-run death, was fleeing police when he struck and killed the aspiring singer, People magazine reports. Bark, who has a previous DUI on his record, collided with a parked car in Seaside Heights, N.J., around 3:49 a.m., county prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said today. The suspect then reportedly failed to stop when a police officer on a bicycle commanded, allegedly hitting Cohen with his vehicle as he was fleeing. As a result, prosecutors have also filed additional charges of aggravated manslaughter, death by auto and eluding police. Bark already has a 2004 conviction for driving under the influence.

Ben Silverman leaves NBC

High-ranking NBC television executive Ben Silverman is leaving the network, according to a press release issued July 27. Silverman, who has been NBC Entertainment's co-chairman since 2007, is said to be "returning to his entrepreneurial roots to form a new venture." Jeff Gaspin has been named chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment, effective immediately. The New York Times reports that Silverman will remain at the network until September to ease the transition, and the Associated Press reports that mogul Barry Diller's IAC/InterActiveCorp is starting a new production company headed by Silverman.

'Dead Space' finds director

D. J. Caruso has been tapped to direct Dead Space, a sci-fi horror film based on the popular video game about an alien virus that reanimates human corpses. "The producers, EA and Caruso have been listening to takes from prospective screenwriters, and once they set a writer and EA signs off on a creative direction, they will auction the property to studios. That will likely happen in early September, " according to Variety. Caruso's previous work includes Disturbia and Eagle Eye.

Mila Kunis may join Natalie Portman in Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan'

Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is in talks to star opposite Natalie Portman (The Other Boleyn Girl) in director Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Kunis, who will appear opposite Denzel Washington in the upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller The Book of Eli, would play a rival ballerina who may or may not be a figment of Portman's character's imagination in the supernatural drama. The film would be Aronofsky's first since his acclaimed, Oscar-nominated turn with The Wrestler.

Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis among comedians contributing to graphic novel series

Comedians including Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis, Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, B.J. Novak, and Janeane Garofalo will contribute to the new graphic novel anthology series Comedy Death Ray, Variety reports. Producers at American Original plan to develop TV and film spin-offs from the comics' comics.

'King Kong' prequel novel headed to the big screen

Spirit Pictures has purchased film rights to Kong: King of Skull Island, an authorized 2004 prequel to the tale of King Kong, Variety reports. Spirit plans to use motion-capture technology similar to that in Robert Zemeckis films like The Polar Express and Beowulf to depict the book's island full of prehistoric creatures.

HBO leads GLAAD's Network Responsibility Index

HBO has taken the highest ranking in the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's annual Network Responsibility Index, according to a press release issued July 27. This year's report found that 42 percent of HBO's prime-time programming hours between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009 featured gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people — far more than any of the 14 other cable and broadcast networks studied. Showtime came in second place, with 26 percent. ABC was the highest-placing broadcast network with 24 percent; below it were the CW with 20 percent and Fox with 11 percent, while NBC and CBS lagged behind with just eight percent and five percent, respectively.

Moon Bloodgood cast in Spielberg pilot

Steven Spielberg's upcoming Noah Wyle-led TNT drama is rounding out its cast. Moon Bloodgood is set to play Anne, a child therapist who becomes Wyle's confidant following the alien invasion that kills both their spouses. Wyle plays Tom, the civilian leader of the resistance forces against alien occupiers. Jessy Schram "will play Karen, an athletic tomboy who works as a motorcycle scout," and Seychelle Gabriel will play Lourdes, "a pretty teenager who has lost family and helps run the camp's makeshift commissary," according to the Hollywood Reporter. Maxim Knight will play Tom's youngest son.

Maggie Grace, Cary Elwes, Christine Lahti cast in indie drama

Christine Lahti, Maggie Grace, Hal Holbrook, Cary Elwes, Jonathan Tucker and Joanna Cassidy have all been cast in the upcoming indie drama Flying Lessons, directed by rookie Derek Magyar and written by Thomas Kuehl. The film follows a young woman "coming to terms with her father's suicide when she returns to her small town," according to the Hollywood Reporter.
