Spirit Pictures has purchased film rights to Kong: King of Skull Island, an authorized 2004 prequel to the tale of King Kong, Variety reports. Spirit plans to use motion-capture technology similar to that in Robert Zemeckis films like The Polar Express and Beowulf to depict the book's island full of prehistoric creatures.

A Kong prequel without Peter Jackson? That’s too bad. Based on Kong’s battle with the three t-rexes, I think Jackson would make a really exciting prequel—except that he’s busy with another prequel—or is he?
