Russell Brand to host MTV awards again

Categories: Music, News, Television

Irreverent comedian Russell Brand — who caused controversy at last year's MTV Video Music Awards by poking fun at the Jonas Brothers' purity rings — will return to host the show again in New York City Sept. 13, the network announced today. Taylor Swift and Muse are set to perform for the first time at the 26th annual event, with Swift singing a never-before-heard version of her "You Belong With Me" and the British rockers making their debut U.S. performance with a new single, "Uprising."

YAY! A reason to watch! Go MTV!

  • Karlie

yeah Russell is an awesome choice, he was so funny last year.

  • Mary

Kudos to MTV for picking Brand again, despite the controversies last year (mostly to do with people not being able to take a joke). I think he is one of the brightest stars in comedy right now who deserves more recognition statewide.

  • Adam

He was terrible last year. The funniest part was when he was leaving the stage and remembered he forgot to say something, awkwardly turned around and said, ‘nothing’s what it seems.’

  • amanda

brilliant, good to know mtv enjoyed him as much as i did, guess i’ll be tuning in to see who he pisses off this year

  • Kevin

AWESOME!!! Brand is brilliant and I cannot wait to see who he makes fun of this time!!!

  • James L Howlett

Who cares? MTV…which ironically stands for Music Television…..doesn’t even play music videos anymore so it makes absolutely no sense for the network to give out awards for music videos.

Russell Brand was terrible last year. All his jokes fell flat. He looked as if he had no idea what the hell to do. MTV has lost its relevancy in pop culture.

  • Katie

I watched his special on either HBO or Comedy Central (can’t remember which) and the guy is absolutely hilarious. The only people upset are the Jonas Brothers fans who are too stupid to realize that purity rings don’t mean anything and the band has no talent at all.

It’s going to be AMAZING! You’ll be able to watch the awards here

It asks you to do a little survey but then it takes you right to the show! Enjoy :)

    Brand is a dbag

Russell is not funny at all. MTV did you ask him again because you can’t get anybody who is actually funny. Russell made last year MTV award show so boring I turn from it and I know alot of other people that did the same. Please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ASK SOMEONE ELSE TO HOST. PLEASSSSSSSSE!!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY, no smart person gets his so call humor. I rather count sheep.

  • Steve

    can’t wait, NOT.
He was deplorable last year and he’s going to bomb again this year.

Just what I want to see again, someone who tries too hard and falls even harder give out awards for videos not even shown on the network, because that makes so much sense. MTV must be so proud of themselves being so far behind the curve of cultural relevance.

Yeah…he really sucks. It’s just…Brand represents a major aspect of what’s wrong with society: being judgemental and mocking towards those who live differently from you. It’s not necessary for comedy, and even though some of his jokes make me laugh, they’re not extraordinary – it’s sophomoric! BUT – I suppose it’s just as well for him to rep MTV in this way. It has become a pretty narrow, limited cesspool of programming in and of itself.

Great news, and so excited about Muse. I’ve been a fan for years.

  • Emily N.

I will NOT be watching. Last year Brand was MEAN SPIRITED, BORING and OFFENSIVE.

  • Samantha LeAnne

Personally I tend to love Brand’s humor, but last year at the VMAs I didn’t. It wasn’t funny, it was mean and uncalled for and I can’t believe MTV is making the same mistake AGAIN. Was nobody else in the world avaliable??? Seriously. I won’t be watching this year.

  • alex

Someone may have said this already, but in saying the “debut US performance” by Muse do you mean their first time playing in the US? Because that’s certainly not true. They’ve played here before! I’ve seen them with my own eyes! Maybe not on tv..if that’s what you mean. But they’re one of the best bands out there at any rate.

  • alex

not sure if my previous comment made it on here, but Muse has played in the US before (maybe not on TV). They were around before Twilight! but anyway..they’re amazing live.

  • Heather

I thought no one liked him last year so this is a suprise. However Muse? I’m down for that.

  • janie

Brand is such a untalented, unfunny sleaze and MTV is too busy making crap like “The Hills” to be bothered with showing videos. Why bother having any music video awards at all anymore?

  • Adam

Really can’t stand him! There’s a difference between being controversial, and being controversial just for the sake of being controversial. Plus he’s not even funny. Don’t tell me I “don’t get” his humour…can I do.
By the way, I predict a clean sweep by the Jonas Brothers. This is MTV…

Brand just says what we’re all thinking… I mean, who hasn’t made fun of the purity rings at one point or another? While the ideal is rich and one our nation certainly needs (hint hint, Jamie Lynn and Bristol), guys don’t really talk about having them. It’s mostly a girl thing. I for one thought Russell was great last year and my only suggestion would be to tame that wild mane of hair!

  • BJohnson

I guess I’m too old (34) to get his humor. Mtv when I was younger stood for Music Television, now it’s just another reality show with no relation to music except for the music inbetween scenes. Thank goodness for SIRIUS which lets me hear the good old VJs of Mtv to remind me when Mtv was really about the music scene.

  • nikki

Will not watch this awards show–last year sucked…Brand sucks…

  • barock

    Whose Russell Brand

  • huh

    WHY!????!….
He’s good in movies, but his stand up and hosting abilities are horrible!!! Where’s Dave Chapelle when you need him??

  • Nipps

Don’t know why anyone is surprised that MTV asked him back. He sucked last year, but everyone was talking about MTV again. No news is bad news, any publicity is good publicity. Personally, I don’t care for the hack and won’t be watching. When was the last time MTV showed a music video?

  • mc

this guy sucks, mtv has lost relevancy
