Warner Bros. has tapped Ryan Reynolds–most recently seen opposite Sandra Bullock in The Proposal (and on EW's summertime Must Issue cover)–to bring the DC Comics' superhero Green Lantern to life, reports Variety. Reynolds is said to have beaten out Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) and Justin Timberlake for the hotly sought role. Don't know your comic books? Green Lantern is part of an intergalactic police force who fights baddies using a magic ring that can conjure almost anything its wearer can imagine. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) will direct the film. Shooting is reportedly slated to begin in January. This is the second superhero franchise Reynolds has scored this summer: his cameo as Deadpool in "Wolverine" was cool enough to inspire Fox to begin developing a spin-off. What do you think, readers? Did Warner Bros. make the right choice–or were you hoping to see Cooper or Timberlake sporting Lantern's high powered jewelry?

Good choice for GL. For Deadpool though, I hope that Marvel/Fox uses the Team X version of Slade from the beginning of X-Men Origins: Wolverine instead of the Weapon XI version at the end of the film.
no deadpool or flash for him then .
I like Ryan Reynolds but i will not go to watch a movie with him as a lead, he is not enough charismatic to carry a movie by himself.
As a supporting actor he is good (like face Sandra Bullock) but that’s all.
There are many better actors for this role but they are not enough famous for the studios right now..pathetic mentality..
What?? Ryan Reynolds was the lead in The Proposal. Sandra Bullock was the supporting actor. Ryan Reynolds was the lead in Definitely, Maybe. One of the best movies I have ever seen.
I think that Reynolds will make a great Green Lantern. He’s a versatile actor [and quite the ladies man].
dunno how he’ll juggle this movie and Deadpool at the same time though.
Yeah, is he going to do Deadpool and GL movies then? Pretty good for the role I think. I thought Pine also would have been a good choice.
This is gonna end up like Christian Bale’s Batman/John Connor debacle. It won’t work. He’s already Deadpool, let someone else be Green Lantern. What’s next? the same person playing seven different superheroes? no.
Well…not my first choice but better than Cooper and beyond better than Timberlake(and really, anyone would be) I think he is more than capable of handling Deadpool and GL…but I won’t be surprised if The Deadpool spin-off doesn’t take flight. Regardless- Yay for Reynolds! <3
Good choice.
The only way I wouldn’t say that is if they had chosen Justin Timberlake, since they didn’t, I’m happy.
(Though I’m still partial to Nathan Fillion after that AMAZING trailer that fan made)
Ryan Reynolds is brilliant in just about every setting. He does action well, he’s a great comedic actor, and he’s got chops for drama as well. Plus, the man is fit. Fit.
Isn’t Green Lantern supposed to be African-American? I know he is in the Justice League tv show, not sure about the original comic though.
Looks like, after years of being given opportunities to be “the next big thing”, Reynolds has finally done it with “Wolverine” and “The Proposal”.
This is not right! Okay I can accept the fact that he went from Hannibal Kane to Deadpool. Smart choice in that aspect, going from a unkown character to a major player in the Marvel Universe. But this isn’t right! You DO NOT jump from Marvel to DC! Thats shows a lack of respect for your characters. I’m sure he could pull of Green Lantern but its kinda like what happen to James Mardsen. He went from playing Cyclops The Leader Of The X-Men, to Richard White? It seems like producers just want to tick off their target audience. (sigh) Kevin Smith would understand.
isn’t green lantern supposed to be Black? whats next casting a white guy as black panther!!! thats not right!
actually – the original comic version of GL was white and named alan scott. the most famous GL was hal jordan…played by reynalds.
the “black” GL was john stewart and was added to the cartoon. there are many GL – they are a police force…
check your info before making this a race issue..there could be many GL movies covering the many (even alien) GLs.
there is more than one green lantern. the african american green lantern is john stewart. the main lantern is hal jordan, who reynolds is playing.
Noooooooo….
bradley cooper all the way!
@tyson…
There are several Green Lanterns. You are thnking of John Stewart. He came after Hal Jordan, the most famous Green Lantern. THAT is who Reynolds is cast as….do a searh and you’ll see the history of the Green Lantern Corp.
GO to YOUTUBE and watch
LITTLE MONKEY BOY CLIMBING
its a hilarious video!
So an actor is playing a DC AND Marvel superhero?!?! My Lord – lemme check. Yep, the world has not stopped spinning. GET OVER IT. Actors act; period. You get an opportunity, you take it.
It doesn’t matter who is cast; the movie is gonna suck balls
Its kind of annoying to see people upset bc they think The Green Lantern is only an African-American. Read up on it people..Green Lantern is many. Its a police force basically. There was Hal Jordan, Kyle Rainer and Jon Stuart..some of the most famous. Jon was the African-American…Hal Jordan is a white dude and a good fit for Reynolds. However, I do believe he should stick to Marvel seeing as he started there with Blade and went on to Deadpool. The crossover does seem a little ridiculous. But anything is better than Timberlake dawning the ring and green tights.
There are many Green Lanterns in the DC Universe. The most popular are Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner and John Stewart.
John Stewart is the black one everyone remembers from Justice League/Unlimited animated series.
Ryan Reynolds would probably work best as Kyle Rayner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Rayner…but we’ll see. I think he’s a good actor and if they use the full Green Lantern Corps it could work nicely. Look out for Sinestro as the main villain.
as much as I am a HUGE Ryan Reynolds fan, I must admit I had been crossing my fingers that Bradley Cooper would get the role. o well.
I can’t believe that Warner Bros. is giving such a plum role to such an untalented and overrated actor. Why?
I was looking forward this, not anymore.
Ryan Reynolds is a terrible actor and so very overrated, please don’t. Find an out of work actor that can act.
Yessss! Ryan Reynolds all the way! He is adorable, witty and looks good in a superhero costume
i was hoping to see Cooper snag the role.i love Reynold’s but don’t want to overdose on upcoming exposure.i really dislike how the industry revolves around a small group of actors at a time til we can’t stand any of them.remember when jude law was in every other film a few yrs back,i got pretty sick of sandy bullock for awhile, and i certainly don’t think Bale snagging batman and terminator did him any favors.
i’d rather see Ryan as Deadpool, wish WB would share the love and let another up and comer carry wear your super hero cape.
Make up your minds…Flash? Dead Pool? Green Latern? I don’t wanna see the same person playing multiple super heroes.
What’s this fascination with Reynolds lately? He plays the same character in every movie. Cooper would have been much better.
Yes Reynolds is known for his comedic roles but look at him in Smokin’ Aces. He had some comedic moments in that, but it didn’t overpower his role as an agent in a highly stressful and deadly situation. I’m thinking he’ll pull off Green Lantern/Hal Jordan just fine.
I’ve wanted to see him play the Flash, but now I’m wondering who’d fill that role…
…Sean William Scott?
Deadpool… a spin-off? What the F! Wolverine s****!!!
