Director Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Never Been Kissed) has been tapped to helm Sony's upcoming animated/live action hybrid Smurfs movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is slated for release in both 3D and 2D formats on December 17, 2010.

The Chimpmunks movie didn’t work out that well. Maybe this will do better.
*sigh* When will they learn to leave well enough alone? The majority of 70’s and 80’s cartoons do not translate well to the big screen, and they end up altering the original concept so much that a lot of people who loved the ‘toon refuse to see the movie! Please bear in mind, I said “majority,” not all.
