I read somewhere that the city made $4 million on the jump in hotel revenue, car rentals, and services (restaurants, clubs, super markets, etc) for the people who traveled to LA for the memorial. It would make sense that if people came to LA solely for the memorial the city benefitted from those folks. Not to mention, when they come up with these estimates, they include support personnel (police, fire, etc.) who would have been working anyway. Sure some were added folks, some got OT, but some would have been working anyway. Unless they charged for the tickets (which they didn’t), it is no different than any other funeral that provides police escorts or traffic control. Quit trying to stick it to a grieving family. Vultures.
fatboy….I’d like for you to tell the people on welfare to suck it up!! oh wait, that’s different, right??
The Jacksons should step up and pay the bill. Do their childish additudes preclude them from being responsible for their actions?
Evidently. Asking the fans to pay is like asking double for price of a song they already bought.
The Jackson’s have money, they are members of this community, let them step up and do the responsible thing.
Ken, just like the rest who don’t get it…the people pay, not the city, so the city making money is the problem, not the tax paying people. I guess you missed the point
There is a major poll running over at http://www.tinyurl.com/evilgood as to whether Michael Jackson was good or evil. Evil is currently in the lead! I think this poll is being recorded in some sort of record book, anyways, everybody go vote for good!
Michael pays his taxes in California it was about time he got something back. Besides all the court trials for the scandals he had with little children took a big chunk of his money where do you suppose all that money when into CA? About all the scandals he had with little kids isn’t the same with Michael Angela and Leonardo De Vinci. At least that’s what I learned when I visit the house of Michael Angelo in Florence Italy. Michael Angelo did it to become a great sculpture of the man figure. All geniuses have controversial news. I’m speaking in behalf my constitutional rights of freedom of speech.
Have the city charge the event host an EVENT TAX FEE – end of story. Charge by the number of attendees. When New York has that NEW YEARS EVE outside, how much does that cost the city and how come they are not complaining? But when there are BIG events in Los Angeles, the city treats it like an ALL-WAR defense like they are expecting the worst where people will always riot and kill each other. The city of Los Angeles is like the waiters in restaurants. They know that if the host has BIG money, they will give them the BEST service, but they also expect a HUGE TIP from them.

Stop complaining and relax.
Miss Jackson,
Isn’t that the point, he brought all of these problems upon himself. When a grown man decides to spend all of his time with little children and not with his peers, this would tend to provoke questions regarding his motives. This is especially true in a PC (politically correct) society. We pay for our actions, he paid for his, that was his choice.
people in CA will not be “paying for this” it is a part of normal buisness…it comes out of the budgets for police and fire etc, which are offset by tax revs the city hauled in from the vent, who cares anyway!

Where I live if you want a police escort for the memorial/funeral you have to pay it. It is a hefty charge included in the funeral expenses. It is a LAW within our City/County. Much less the additional costs of an entertainers followers. How much would an Iraqi Veteran be charged for escort services in LA?
They should have put the whole thing on pay-per-view and they could have covered all the costs. It was more a second-rate variety show than a memorial service anyway. Actually, given that this was the Jackson family, I’m surprised they didn’t do that.
While I don’t think we need to spending money on stupid events like a Lakers parade. Michael Jackson’s passing has brought millions of tourist to LA and the money generated for businesses in tourism (hotels, restaurants, souvenirs, etc.)was greater than the $1.4 million tab of the memorial.
Will the city pay for my memorial as well? No??!!?? Then why shouldn’t MJ’s estate pay? The resot of us would have to.
This is ridiculous, given the current state of CA’s economy and budget woes.
This would also lend to the sense of entitlement that is rampant in our culture.
I for one will be glad when this circus is over. BTW, what will Publicity Whore Al “Am I on Camera?” Sharpton do now???
I just want to love one another and play Hotbox…
