'Spider-Man' musical to star Evan Rachel Wood, Alan Cumming

Categories: Stage

Evan Rachel Wood, now starring in Woody Allen's Whatever Works, and Alan Cumming will star in the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, which is due to begin preview performances Feb. 25, 2010 for an opening later that spring. Wood will make her Broadway debut as Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's girlfriend, while Cumming (a Tony winner for the 1998 revival of Cabaret) plays the show's chief villain, Norman Osborn, a.k.a. Green Goblin. The role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man has yet to be cast. Julie Taymor, the Tony-winning director of The Lion King, has been overseeing the production, whose budget has reportedly topped $40 million. The show features music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge. Taymor has worked with both stars before: Wood starred in the director's Beatles-inspired movie Across the Universe, while Cumming appeared in two of Taymor's Shakespeare-based films, Titus and the upcoming The Tempest.

“Being on Broadway has been my dream since I knew how to dream," Wood told EW.com earlier this year. "I am excited but so nervous." The actress noted that she had performed in a workshop of the musical with her Across the Universe costar Jim Sturgess. "We are trying to convince him to play Peter. He has a great voice and we are already comfortable together and Julie [Taymor] likes him, but it is a huge time commitment to do Broadway." (Additional reporting by Carrie Bell)

Categories: Movies, Music

A scene in the upcoming comedy Bruno featuring Michael Jackson's sister La Toya has been permanently deleted from the film. In a statement, Universal, the studio behind the movie, says, "Out of respect for the Jackson family, the filmmakers have decided to remove asmall scene involving La Toya Jackson." Bruno opens on July 10.

After Michael Jackson's death was reported yesterday, actor Sacha Baron Cohen and the makers Brunoscrambled to delete the scene justbefore the film's premiere at Mann's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. The scene, which had previously been seen by journalists, foundBaron Cohen's Bruno — a wildly gay, fame-seeking Austrian fashionista– snagging an interview with La Toya. Ms. Jackson, who did not appearto be in on the joke, gamely tried to answer Bruno's questions even ashe interrogated her about her brother Michael and tried surreptitiouslyto find Michael's number on her cellphone. The scene ended, as mostthings in Bruno's world do, with a moment of raw, funny discomfort.

Michael Jackson: Rumors of drug dependency surface

Categories: In Memoriam, Music

Though it may be weeks before toxicology results are available, indications that Michael Jackson, who died June 25 at the age of 50 of sudden cardiac arrest, was dependent on drugs and alcohol are coming to light. A source tells People that family members attempted an intervention in Las Vegas in 2006, when they believed he was addicted to prescription drugs: "Michael got p—ed off. He said he wasn't on drugs. But they didn't believe him," the source says. A second source alleges Jackson was known to consume alcohol, straight morphine, Demerol, Oxycontin, Valium, and Xanax.

Meanwhile, the AP reports that in 2007 Jackson settled a lawsuit with a Beverly Hills pharmacy that claimed he owed than $100,000 for prescription drugs ordered over a two-year period. Police are now said to be searching for a doctor they hope will have information about Jackson's medications.

Jackson family lawyer Brian Oxman wasted no time in bringing Jackson's alleged addictions to the attention of the media. Speaking to CBS News' Harry Smith the night of Jackson's death, Oxman stressed that, like everyone, he would have to wait for the autopsy and toxicology results, but said, "I have warned that one day Michael Jackson would wake up dead, and that I would not be silent if that was the case, because of the misuse of medications. I have made that statement to family members and I told them I would not be still."

Liza Minnelli, who phoned The Early Show Friday morning from Paris to remember her friend as a curious soul who delighted in dinners with Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly, and knew every word to every song in her father Vincent Minnelli's films, is also bracing for the results: "I'm sure when the autopsy comes, all hell's going to break loose," she told Smith. "So, thank God we're celebrating him now."

'Bruno' filmmakers remove Michael Jackson-related scene

Categories: Movies

After Michael Jackson's death was reported yesterday, actor Sacha Baron Cohen and the makers of his new shockfest Bruno scrambled to delete a scene featuring Michael's sister LaToya—just hours before the film's premiere at Mann's Chinese Theater, in Los Angeles. The sudden cut made for a conspicuously jumpy stretch, but the filmmakers narrowly avoided what would have been some uncomfortable, buzz-killing silence at the premiere. No one connected to the film would comment on the deletion of the scene, but it is hard to imagine that it will be restored to the movie before Bruno opens on July 10.

The scene, which had previously been seen by journalists, found Baron Cohen's Bruno—a wildly gay, fame-seeking Austrian fashionista—snagging an interview with LaToya. Ms. Jackson, who did not appear to be in on the joke, gamely tried to answer Bruno's questions even as he interrogated her about her brother Michael and tried surreptitiously to find Michael's number on her cellphone. The scene ended, as most things in Bruno's world do, with a moment of raw, funny discomfort.

Before the screening at Mann's Chinese, journalists on the red carpet were told they could not ask any questions about Michael Jackson (which is ironic given that Baron Cohen has built a career on blindsiding people with his camera and mic). The actor, who worked the red carpet only in character, made a grand arrival atop a tank. The vehicle was covered with mirrors, like a disco ball, and Bruno, naturally, was straddling the canon.

Perez Hilton apologizes for gay slur

Categories: Lawsuits

Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton apologized yesterday for using a gay slur against the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am at a Toronto nightclub on June 22. "I am sorry," Hilton (né Mario Lavandeira) posted on his website. "And I mean it. No one is forcing me to write this. I am notfeeling pressured to say this. I am speaking out because I realize thatthe last few days have been more hurtful to me — and many others — thanthe repeated blows I suffered to my head in Toronto this past weekend." Hilton is suing the Peas' tour manager, Polo Molina, for $25,000 for allegedly hitting him outside the Toronto club, and says he plans to donate any money he may gain from the suit to the Matthew Shepard Foundation. However, that organization, which supports diversity programs in education, has declined the offer. "We do not know the details of the lawsuit, whether it has been filed, the nature of his claims or the likely outcome," said MSF Governing Board Chair Judy Shepard in a statement issued yesterday. "But because the lawsuitpresumably involves the physical attack prompted by Mr. Hilton'sadmitted use of an anti-gay slur, the Foundation will be unable toaccept any funds obtained in such a manner."
