Jerry Lewis to direct 'The Nutty Professor' as Broadway musical

Categories: Stage

Jerry Lewis will make his theatrical directing debut on a musical version of The Nutty Professor, Playbill reports. Tony- and Oscar-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line, They're Playing Our Song) will write the songs, and Tony winner Rupert Holmes (Curtains, The Mystery of Edwin Drood) will write the book and lyrics for the show, which is aiming to open on Broadway during the 2010-11 season. Lewis, who received a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at this year's Oscar ceremony, starred in the original 1963 comedy about a geeky professor who develops a potion that turns him into a smooth-talking lothario. He also co-wrote and directed the film, which spawned two successful remakes starring Eddie Murphy in 1996 and 2000. As a performer, Lewis appeared on Broadway in Jerry Lewis at the Palace in 1953 and Damn Yankees in 1995.

Joe Jackson: 'We're the parents. This is where they belong.'

Categories: Music

At a press conference outside the family estate in Encino, Calif., Monday afternoon, Joe Jackson reiterated that Michael Jackson's three children belong with their grandmother, Katherine, who was awarded temporary custody earlier today. "We're the parents. This is where they belong… We're going to take care of them and give them the education they're supposed to have," he said. This morning, Jackson family lawyer Londell McMillan said he didn't believe Debbie Rowe, the mother of Michael's two eldest, would try to separate the children from each other or Katherine, who has taken care of them since Michael's June 25 death. "Debbie Rowe has nothing to do with what we're doing," Joe said at the press conference. He also stated that memorial plans for Michael are still being worked out, and that there is no timeframe he could give the public. He said he wants the investigation into Michael's death to be completed before his son's funeral is held.

Michael Jackson's mother granted temporary custody of his children

Categories: In Memoriam

Katherine Jackson, mother of the late Michael Jackson, filed a petition today in Los Angeles asking to be the legal guardian of his three children and was granted temporary custody. The news comes after Jackson family lawyer Londell McMillan made it clear to the Today show's Matt Lauer this morning that Katherine, who'd already been caring for the children, wanted them to remain with her and husband Joe. "The fortunate reality is that they have a long-term relationship with their loving grandmother, Ms. Katherine Jackson, who I think the world knows and appreciates as just an amazing woman. A very, very loving and strong woman," McMillan said. Asked if Debbie Rowe, mother of two of the children, had approached the family since Michael's June 25 death, McMillan said, "To my knowledge, she has not. And I have no knowledge to suggest that she would do anything to uproot the best interest of these children, which is to stay together in a family that they've known and that they love, and that they feel very, very comfortable in."

'Avenue Q' on Broadway to close

Categories: Stage

After six years on Broadway, the Tony-winning musical Avenue Q will deliver its final performance on Sept. 13, producers announced Monday. The somewhat raunchy puppet-driven show will have played 2,534 performances and 22 previews, becoming the 20th longest running show in Broadway history. (It will pass The Producers on Aug. 13.) The Off Broadway transfer has proven to be an unlikely success story, notoriously beating out Wicked for the Best Musical Tony; the $3.5 million production has also returned $23.5 million to its investors. In addition, Avenue Q spawned a national tour, a short-lived Las Vegas run, and a London production that reopened at the Gielgud Theatre on June 1.

Michael Jackson: Doctor's lawyer says singer was not injected with Demerol

Categories:

A lawyer for Michael Jackson's personal physician tells the Los Angeles Times that reports that the singer was injected with Demerol just before his death last Thursday are "absolutely false." "There was no Demerol. No OxyContin," Edward Chernoff, attorney for Dr. Conrad Murray, told The Times. Chernoff says Jackson wasn't breathing and had a weak pulse when Murray found the singer in bed in his Holmby Hills mansion, so the doctor began administering CPR. Chernoff was present during the LAPD's three-hour interview with Murray on Saturday. Investigators say the doctor is in no way a suspect and told the L.A. Times that reports that Jackson was injected with Demerol or other painkillers are coming from outside the investigation. Chernoff says Murray will wait until the investigation is complete before speaking publicly about the tragedy.
