Star Trek and Lost overlord J.J. Abrams has been asked by Tom Cruise to be a producer on Mission: Impossible 4 according to the new issue of TV Guide (you can see a scan of the relevant page here.) Abrams was the director of 2006's Mission: Impossible III but it is unclear as to whether he will also return in that capacity. In the TV Guide article the producer-director is quoted as saying, "Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea."

'Dan In Real Life' director to make 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green'
Peter Hedges will write and direct Disney's film The Odd Life of Timothy Green according to the Hollywood Reporter. The movie is based on an idea by Ahmet Zappa, the son of late rock legend Frank Zappa, who will produce. Hedges previously directed Pieces of April and Dan In Real Life.
Pete Doherty arrested on drugs charge
The NME is reporting that much troubled Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty was taken into police custody early this morning after a solo show in Gloucester, England. Doherty was arrested for drink driving, possession of drugs and failure to stop for police.
'Without A Trace' actress Poppy Montgomery to appear in 'Cinderella Pact'
Poppy Montgomery will star in the Lifetime movie Cinderella Pact, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film is about a magazine editor who also writes the title's sex advice under a pseudonym. Montgomery previously played Samantha Spade on Without A Trace.
'Tropic Thunder' writer to make casino comedy
Iron Man 2 and Tropic Thunder writer Justin Theroux will direct a comedy called Chief Ron according to Variety. The film is about a conman who opens a casino.
Diane Lane to star in 'Secretariat'
According to Variety Diane Lane will play the owner of the racehorse Secretariat in a film named after the Triple Crown winner and directed by Randall Wallace.
'The View' star Joy Behar gets her own show on HLN
According to The New York Times, The View co-host Joy Behar will get a table all to herself in September, when her 9pm talk show launches on HLN. The series, tentatively titled The Joy Behar Show, will replace repeats of Lou Dobbs Tonight on the channel's schedule. The comedienne will also continue her work on The View.
ABC picks up 'Let's Dance'
With an eye toward filling in the gap between cycles of Dancing with the Stars this winter, ABC has ordered five episodes of the comedic reality competition Let's Dance, reports Variety. Based on the BBC1 show Let's Dance for Comic Relief, the series will feature celebs learning the moves to famous dance routines (e.g., Dirty Dancing's sexy pas de deux). Viewers will vote for their favorites on live weekly episodes, with proceeds from the calls going to charity.
'High School Musical' star Matt Prokop joins Brendan Fraser in 'Furry Vengeance'
High School Musical 3: Senior Year co-star Matt Prokop has been cast opposite Brendand Fraser in Furry Vengeance, a family comedy from Summit Entertainment andParticipant Media, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Prokop will play a city kid forced to move to rural Oregon with his father (Fraser), whose efforts to build a housing development there are complicated by the feisty local wildlife. The project is tentatively slated for a July 2010 release.
'Deadworld' comic headed to the big screen
Watchmen co-writer David Hayter and producer Bill Mechanic are teaming up to turn the zombie comic Deadworld into a potential big-screen franchise, according to Variety. Co-creator Gary Reed will be an executive producer on the project, which depicts a post-apocalyptic world in which the motorcycle-riding King Zombie menaces the few surviving humans. Production is slated to start next year.
