Friday Night Lights' TaylorKitsch — the breakout star of X-Men Origins: Wolverine — has landed the coveted lead role in Disney's John Carter of Mars,according to The Hollywood Reporter. Mars will be the firstlive-action effort from Andrew Stanton, the Oscar-winning director ofPixar favorites Wall-E and Finding Nemo. The film, a big-budgetadaptation of the series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, tells the story of acivil war veteran (Kitsch) who is transported to Mars to fight in anepic war between the planet's opposing races. Kitsch's X-Men co-star LynnCollins has also been cast. Disney is aiming for an early 2010 start date, with dreams of launching a blockbuster franchise on the same level asPirates of the Caribbean.

Morgan Freeman in legal brawl over Mississippi car crash
An attorney for Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman is claiming the star is not wholly responsible for a car crash that left himself and a female passenger seriously injured, reports the Associated Press. The accident occurred last August in Mississippi not far from Freeman's residence. Earlier this year, the woman, Demaris Meyer, sued the star for medical expenses and other damages. According to the AP, court papers filed today on Freeman's behalf claim that even though the star was driving the vehicle, Meyer was partially to blame for the accident.
Guillermo del Toro confirms Hugo Weaving in 'The Hobbit'
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 (skip to the 02:10:55 mark), director Guillermo del Toro confirmed that Hugo Weaving will reprise his Lord of the Rings role of Elrond in the upcoming Hobbit films. Weaving joins Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf), who will also reappear in the two highly anticipated films, scheduled for a 2011 and 2012 release.
David Mamet's 'Oleanna' Broadway-bound?
Broadway is eyeing David Mamet's Oleanna, starring Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles, which recently opened to raves in Los Angeles. Variety reports that the production, scheduled to play in L.A. through July 12, will probably come to New York this fall, though no official timeline has been set. If Mamet's 17 year-old Oleanna does hit Broadway, it would compete with his own new play, Race, premiering at the Barrymore Theater.
Brittany Murphy joins 'Something Wicked'
Brittany Murphy (8 Mile) has joined the cast of Something Wicked, director Darin Scott's thriller about a teen and his girlfriend, whose parents are killed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy will star opposite Shantel VanSanten and John Robinson (Transformers).
Marcus Nispel lands 'Conan' remake
Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) will direct the long-awaited Conan the Barbarian remake. Variety reports that the filmmaker will begin Conan late this year in Bulgaria and South Africa, ending nine years of false starts. The script was written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, whose credits include Sahara.
Madonna wins appeal for Malawi adoption
Early this morning, Madonna was granted the legal right to adopt a child from Malawi after being denied by a lower court in April, People reports. The lower court initially ruled that the singer had not spent enough time in the African country. Preparations are now underway for Madonna to bring Chifundo "Mercy" James, 3, home from Malawi to join fellow adoptee David, also 3. Madonna is not expected to fly to Africa from New York, but the director of her Raising Malawi charity is arranging a private jet for the child.
Madonna's rep released a statement on the singer's behalf: "I am extremely grateful for the Supreme Court's ruling on my application to adopt Mercy James. I am ecstatic…My family and I look forward to sharing our lives with her."

Amy Poehler is starring in Universal's movie adaptation of Jarrett Krosoczka's upcoming children's graphic novel series Lunch Lady, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The stories are centered on a mild-mannered school cafeteria server who secretly investigates wrongdoings. The books also feature three kids who try to figure out her double life. The series will launch this July with Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians and Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute, with Lunch Lady and the Author Visit Vendetta scheduled to be released in December and Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown set for summer 2010.
'Gulliver's Travels' casts Chris O'Dowd as Jack Black's nemesis
Chris O'Dowd (The Boat That Rocked, The IT Crowd) is joining Jack Black, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet, and Emily Blunt Fox's comedic movie adaptation of the classic Jonathan Swift story Gulliver's Travels, according to The Hollywood Reporter. O'Dowd will play Edward, Black's Lilliputian nemesis. Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens) is directing.
'United States of Tara' casts Viola Davis
Viola Davis is joining Toni Collette's Showtime series United States of Tara for seven of the upcoming second season's 12 episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Davis will play Lynda, an unconventional artist who plays a significant role in the lives of Tara and her daughter.
Davis was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for Doubt. She recently appeared in Madea Goes to Jail and State of Play.
