Natalie Portman set for Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan'
Natalie Portman is attached to star in Darren Aronofsky's thriller Swan Song, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The supernatural thriller about a New York City ballet dancer has gone through several incarnations since initially being set up at Universal in early 2007, but Portman's involvement could help it finally get made. John McLaughlin's original script also underwent a rewrite by Mark Heyman, a development executive at Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures. The story follows a veteran ballerina (Portman's role) who finds herself in an intensely competitive situation with a rival, who may be either an apparition or a delusion. The film could start shooting as early as this year.

David Letterman apologizes for Palin comment: 'It was...a coarse joke'
David Letterman will use tonight's installment of CBS' Late Show to weigh in (once again) on the Palin Family joke that prompted an angry response from the Alaska governor and a flurry of press coverage questioning whether the comedy-show host went too far. CBS has released the following excerpts from tonight's monologue (taped earlier today in New York):
"There was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There's no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, can't be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They're angry at me because they said, 'How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?' And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor…."
"But I didn't, and now people are getting angry and they're saying, 'Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who's completely innocent, minding her own business,' and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there."
Letterman went on to say that he's "never made jokes like this as long as we've been on the air, 30 long years" and said he understands why people may be upset. "So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future."

Harry Potter: J.K. Rowling's publisher denies plagiarism in 'Goblet of Fire'
Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, publisher of the hugely popular Harry Potter books, rejected claims today that Potter author J.K. Rowling plagiarized "substantial" parts of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Reuters reports. The estate of the late author Adrian Jacobs filed a claim with London's High Court alleging that substantial portions of Rowling's fourth novel in the boy-wizard series are similar to Jacobs' 1987 booklet The Adventures of Willy the Wizard — No 1 Livid Land. The Jacobs estate claims that the notion of wizards traveling on trains was originally conceived by Jacobs, though the bulk of their argument seems to stem from Goblet of Fire's central plot element of a wizard tournament.
According to a statement from the estate: “Both Willy and Harry are required to work out the exact nature of the main task of the contest which they both achieve in a bathroom assisted by clues from helpers, in order to discover how to rescue human hostages imprisoned by a community of half-human, half-animal fantasy creatures.” Bloomsbury released a statement of its own today, maintaining that, “this claim is without merit and will be defended vigorously.” Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is estimated to have sold 400 million copies in addition to grossing hundreds of millions of dollars for the subsequent film.

The show's initial outing in April drew a surprising 10 million viewers.
