Police chiefs in two neighboring Ohio towns are suspected of plotting a burglary at the home of the surrogate carrying Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s twins, according to People.com. Under investigation by the state’s Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for attempting to obtain information that could be sold to a tabloid publication, both Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack and Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter remain on duty. Carpenter told a local Ohio news outlet, “I’m 100 percent innocent in this and my department is as well.” Broderick’s publicist tells People: "Matthew and Sarah Jessica have complete faith in the legal system….Because it's a criminal investigation, we will not be making any more comment. What I can say is the entire family looks forward to the healthy delivery of their daughters later on this summer."

Bret Michaels won't sue over Tonys mishap
Bret Michaels, who suffered a fractured nose and a split lip while performing at June 7's Tony Awards, will not be taking legal action over the descending piece of stage decoration that caused his injuries and made him the talk of the telecast. "I want to make very clear to everybody that — first and foremost — I was honored to be asked to be at the Tonys. I'd never done it before and in all my life it's not something I thought I'd be on. I was really excited," he tells People. "There's no lawsuit. I'm not doing any of that. I'm taking the high road."
'The Haunting in Connecticut' sequel in the works
Production company Gold Circle films is developing The Haunting in Georgia, a follow-up to March's surprise horror hit The Haunting in Connecticut, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new project, to be directed by House of the Devil helmer Ti West, is expected to be similar in tone and theme to the original, which grossed a healthy $55.4 million theatrically.
Witherspoon signs up for 'Pharm Girl'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is developing the comedy Pharm Girl as a vehicle for Reese Witherspoon. The project, which is being scripted by Bad Santa co-writers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, concerns a woman (Witherspoon) who uncovers unsettling truths about the pharmaceutical industry as she moves up the corporate ladder in a large drug company. Ficarra and Requa are in talks to direct the project, while Witherspoon is producing under her Type A shingle.
'Mission: Impossible IV': Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams to return for 2011 release
Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have agreed to co-produce Mission: Impossible IV for Paramount, Variety reports. The film is scheduled for a 2011 release. Abrams is currently at work on a Star Trek sequel — he has not decided if he will direct or just produce that film — and Cruise is committed to make an untitled film with Cameron Diaz for 20th Century Fox, directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma). No writers have been assigned to M:I4 yet, but a decision is likely soon. Abrams will not decide if will direct M:I4 until after he sees a finished script. Reports surfaced last week that Cruise and Abrams had met to discuss the project.
M:I4 would be Cruise's first film at Paramount since his production company left the lot in August 2006. Sumner Redstone, the head of Paramount parent company, Viacom, had made disparaging public comments about the star, saying that Cruise's now-infamous couch-jumping on Oprah and the resulting media firestorm had cost the studio between $100 million and $150 million on M:I3 because Cruise had turned off women. (The film earned $398 million worldwide, the lowest-grossing installment of the franchise.) Cruise's 14-year relationship with the studio ended soon afterward. Cruise took over United Artists in the wake of the break-up. In March 2008, Redstone began trying to mend fences and invited Cruise to lunch in Beverly Hills. Redstone said of the meeting that he and Cruise "agreed the past is the past and we would put it behind us and renew our relationship." Which is not to say that they'll be taking family vacations together anytime soon. "I wouldn't exactly say that they 'made-up,'" a source familiar with the situation tells EW.com. "It was more like a gentlemen's handshake." At recent appearance, Redstone reportedly described Cruise as a "great actor and a good friend."
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt give $1 million in refugee aid
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation, donated $1 million to the UN Refugee Agency Wednesday to help displaced people in Pakistan, People.com reports. Antonio Guterres, the head of the agency, thanked the foundation and called the situation in Pakistan "the most challenging humanitarian crisis of the past decade." Jolie has worked with the UN agency for eight years. Pitt and his siblings gave $1 million this week, too, to create the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center in Springfield, Mo., in honor of their mother. Jolie will celebrate World Refugee Day in Washington, D.C., on Thursday with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
J.D. Salinger's 'The Catcher in the Rye': Restraining order issued in copyright case
A federal court judge in New York issued a temporary restraining order on Wednesday against the U.S. publication of the book 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye, noting substantial similarities between it and J.D. Salinger's iconic teen novel The Catcher in the Rye, the Associated Press reports. Salinger has sued to block the publication of 60 Years Later, by Swedish author Fredrik Colting, saying it is the equivalent of an unauthorized sequel; Colting's attorney did not dispute that the central character in 60 Years Later, called Mr. C, is meant to be an older Holden Caufield, the main character in Salinger's book. Colting's lawyer argued, however, that 60 Years Later provides meaningful criticism of Salinger and Caulfield, and therefore should be allowed to be published. But U.S. District Judge Deborah Batts said she had "difficulty" seeing that criticism.
Following today's order, Batts has 10 days to make a final ruling on whether to block the publication of 60 Years Later, but she can extend that deadline if necessary. According to Publishers Weekly, Batts' ruling is the first time that the Second Circuit court has explicitly stated that a single character from a single work is protected by copyright.

Emmys moved back one week, will air Sept. 20 on CBS
CBS announced today that it will air the 61st Annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday, Sept. 20, instead of the previously announced Sept. 13. The decision was made after the network learned that its sister cable network MTV was airing the Video Music Awards on the same day. "We had the flexibility to move; they didn't," according to a statement from Jack Sussman, exec VP of specials at CBS. "It's best for the industry and the audience that these events not compete against each other."
