Johnny Depp, Tim Burton on board for 'Dark Shadows'

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies, News

At the LA premiere of Public Enemies, Johnny Depp confirmed that he'll star in an upcoming big screen version of the cult 1960's show Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton. Rumors of the project have circulated ever since Depp, an admitted fan of the gothic soap opera, acquired the rights to the series in 2007. Producer Richard D. Zanuck confirmed Depp and Burton's involvement last December, but this marks the first time that Depp has publicly said that Burton will direct. "Dark Shadows with Tim will also be down the line," Depp told EW June 23 in LA. "Timhas to finish [Alice in] Wonderland before he can start work on the next film. Ilove what he did with that. I think people are going to be so excitedand satisfied when they see that film. Some of his best work.  And Iwill be thrilled to work with him again on Dark Shadows. I was a bigfan of it when I was a kid and I think it is another of those perfectprojects for Tim to reimagine."

    YES!

Was psyched about it till I heard it was a Burton fair. The pics of Alice in Wonderland look absolutely lame. Johnny Depp looks like Elijah Wood in make-up

OH. MY. GOD! I love Dark Shadows sooo much and I am can picture Johnny Depp as Barnabas! I think Tim Burton will do a great job making the movie everything that it should be! I just hope that they start bringing back the original gems! I hope they cast Victoria correctly!

I was a faithful viewer of Dark Shadows as a kid. It was my favorite show… I still remember being a little scared after watching -it seems so campy now …
Should be interesting to see Tim Burton’s version of that iconic show of my youth…

Dark Shadows was my favorite show when I was a kid… I still remember being a bit scittish after watching…
It seems so campy now by comparison…
Should be very interesting to see Tim Burton’s version of this iconic show of my youth…

OH! Great another classic that Tim Burton will ruin! I really do not like how he has done the remake of classics. Sweeney Todd was a train wreck. The play/Opera is much better and the storyline is much easier to follow. I guess I am not a fan of his one bit and Johnny Depp could do better. I think his non-Tim Burton movies are the best.

Did you actually rewrite your post Wendy?

OMG! Where have I been? First I’ve heard of this but the pairing couldn’t be more perfect. Watched DS religiously as a kid. (I even TRIED to like the update in the early 90’s.)Anxious to hear about add’l casting but I will def. see this one!

I can’t wait to see BOTH of these movies…I had the Dark Shadows board game as a kid – I loved Barnabas Collins…I’d hide behind our green chair and watch it every afternoon…so much fun…

I love it. Thank you Johnny Depp for bringing it back! It was a terrific series and I can only imagine how great it will be once again. Looking forward to it. Brings back lots of memories for me. I loved that show.

I was in the Dark Shadows fan club when I was a kid. I had a card and everything. Hilarious. Anyway, I hope they make this movie dark and Johnny Depp isn’t silly and campy in it. It’s a good thing Depp doesn’t age so he can keep being in every movie every year.

  • Amelia

If that’s the case, then can we get rid of all this TWILIGHT CENTRAL stuff on EW and replace it with Dark Shadows info?

  • wg

    SQUEE!!!!!!!!!!!
    Sorry. Had to do it.

  • darclyte

With Burton alone it would probably be all spectacle and now substance, but with Depp on board, it COULD be very interesting to say the least.

  • dave

Umm Angela, the storyline in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd is not hard to follow at all. Are you being serious?

  • JACKI

i KNOW THIS WILL NEVER ET TO THEM BUT MAYBE SOMEONE WILL PASS IT ALONG, I KNOW YA’LL ARE GOING TO PUT YOUR OWN SPIN ON THE STORY LINE BUT PLEASE DON’T MESS WITH IT TO MUCH, NOT ANOTHER WILLY WONKA PLEASE.

WOW I cant wait… I remember as a kid I got to meet Barnabas at a Chanel Home Lumber store opening.. I got right up to the front of the line then he had to take a blook break but I was 1st when he returned… spooky up close just like on TV… CANT WAIT

  • Briana

Yup. Already want to buy my tickets.

  • michijet

YES! YES! YES! to Depp, not sure about Burton.

  • me

Yet another Burton/Depp colaboration and I’m sure Helena Bohnam-Carter will probably be in there too. I can’t wait!! This trio can do know wrong!

  • Owen

Can Anne Hathaway PLEASE play Victoria Winters?

  • Bobby’s Robot

Anne H. would be a great Vicki. I think HBC is too old for Angelique – maybe Julia.

  • Jacquelyn

is there any truth to the rumor that went about a year or so ago that Mr. Depp was going to take on the lead in a remake of Wuthering Heights? Couldn’t think of anyone better to play Heathcliff, can you?

  • Anita

Glad to hear about the movie, but I’d much prefer a TV series (preferably on HBO)
