In a new statement to People about Chaz Bono's sex change, his mother Cher says, "Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support. I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny and although I may not understand I will strive to be understanding. The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child." Chaz, born Chastity Bono, recently turned 40. As for Chaz's stepmother Mary Bono Mack, who married the late Sonny Bono in 1986, the U.S. Congresswoman (R-California) told People that Chaz "has always been a loving and important part of our family who has supported us all through thick and thin. This is a very difficult decision that Chaz has fully vetted, and over the past decade, has discussed the matter thoroughly and consulted therapists and medical experts. As he moves forward, I will be there to support him and love him every step of the way."

Very nice to hear. Good luck, Chaz!
I understand that everyone is supposed to be accepting of everybody else and everything they might want to do (within reason), but I’ve just got to say that I find this all a bit freaky. People trying to “become” the opposite sex is just plain weird. Maybe it’s not the p.c. opinion I’m supposed to spout, but really, c’mon. Women are women, and all of the surgery and hormones in the world won’t make them magically turn into actual men. I feel sorry for her and her struggle with her life.
to Well………….
It is ‘weird’ to me that people like yourself would take the time to write your disapproval for someone who would undertake difficult surgery in the name of their humanity and their reality. Where is your confusion, judgment and outrage over the thousands of people who undergo cosmetic surgery purely out of vanity. How about some outrage for spouses and parents who force their partners or children to endure surgery to “correct” issues they, alone, see as flaws. Don’t feel sorry for Chaz Bono, he’ll be fine without your understanding. He may never be your version of a man, but he’s way closer than you are to my version of a decent human being.
Sean, why are you making the leap to cosmetic surgery? And why do you think that I support it? Though one could argue that someone could be so confused and damaged that they would see changing the shape of their nose as something that would be necessary in the name of their humanity and reality. And I didn’t realize that expressing my opinion diminished my value as a decent human being; I guess you have to express the “right” opinion to retain your worth. I never said anything about Chaz other than that I felt for her; the only one attacking and criticizing people here is you.
