VH1 picks up OCD series

Filed under: News and tagged:

VH1 is following A&E's lead and taking on obsessive-compulsive disorders in a new reality series. OCD Project will "follow a group of participants suffering from severe forms of the disease. They'll live together for several weeks in a treatment facility and undergo both individual and group treatment," according to Variety. The show is expected to fit with VH1's other rehabilitation-oriented series Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew and Sober House.

Wow… just… wow. Obsessed has me upset enough, and now this show, in typical VH1 fasion, will continue this charming new tred of totally humiliating people with a really difficult mental disease, just so that those fortunate enough to not be afflicted can make fun of the kooky, crazy people.

I agree. I have no respect for vh1 or mtv. At least ae handles it with some respect. im sure vh1′s show will be a total mockery of every person in the house.

I disagree. I have obsessive-compulsive disorder and I think that these shows make it easier to see how others, like myself, live with the disease.

I am a volunteer at OCD Action, the UK’s largest OCD charity. While we welcome the awareness of OCD being raised, we must stress the importance that it is always done in the most professional and sensitive manner possible.
It is essential that any participants or viewers of the likes of VH1’s forthcoming show are provided with comprehensive support. Direct participants must be made aware of the potential consequences of their subsequent ‘fame’, while viewers should be pointed in the direction of helpful treatment resources.
Although OCD can be treated very successfully, it can be an extremely debilitating condition for people with the condition who have not yet reached this stage or who are unaware of the treatment options. In fact, it is listed by the World Health Organisation as one of the top 10 debilitating illnesses globally.

I, too, have obsessive compulsive disorder and am recieving treatment for it right now. One thing I am currently learning is that just because I have OCD doesn’t make me a “kooky, crazy person.” That being said, I will speak for everyone who has OCD, we do not appreciate being reffered to as “kooky, crazy people.”
