David Letterman will use tonight's installment of CBS' Late Show to weigh in (once again) on the Palin Family joke that prompted an angry response from the Alaska governor and a flurry of press coverage questioning whether the comedy-show host went too far. CBS has released the following excerpts from tonight's monologue (taped earlier today in New York):
"There was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There's no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, can't be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They're angry at me because they said, 'How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?' And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor…."
"But I didn't, and now people are getting angry and they're saying, 'Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who's completely innocent, minding her own business,' and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there."
Letterman went on to say that he's "never made jokes like this as long as we've been on the air, 30 long years" and said he understands why people may be upset. "So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future."

Ken Tucker on David Letterman's apology: A sorry situation

Palin’s faux outrage over this very minor “joke” is nothing more than a way for this vapid woman to cling to her 15 minutes of fame. I wish Letterman would stop giving this idiot additional television exposure. Please, Dave, just let her fade into irrelevancy. She’s a dumb person who never should have had the brief fame that she did.
I thought that Dan Tucker said Letterman should no longer address the topic?

substitute Pelosi for Bristol and the left would be outraged. Instead they act as though Palin is too sensitive. Anything goes on Palin, because they hate her. The party of the double standard.
Why is my name QA? Weird.
Yeah. All made up outrage. Seriously. A child could understand that Palin is stupidly trying to get attention. She’s the embarrassment.
Fire the dirty BUM! Do it now!!!!!
QA:
All “made up”? Did you even read Letterman’s apology which acknowledged that people could have misunderstood the “joke” being about WILLOW (14 year old)?
Time for these jerks to shut their mouths and get some respect. Just like Palin and Letterman, Ms. California Carrie Prejean has her enemies on the run now http://tinyurl.com/mdmrxu
Wow, are Prejean and Palin the true neo-feminists?

You are the one using the word “hate”. Only Palin supporters use that word. Sad. There is even a huge question as to whether or not Willow was even at the game. Get over it.
To Jeff W,
there is a dumb person involved but it’s not Palin! Guess who!!,you idiot !!
Carrie:
Yes (they care about UNBORN female children too ; )
There really are no words to express what a completely horrible, morally bankrupt person Sarah Palin is. She is a tireless, stupid hack. To create a false story about a joke that didn’t even occur as it’s being repeated is typical of her complete lack of “character”. She has only one trick in her book, as Governor, as VP candidate, and now as “mother” – SHE IS A LIAR!
Ever the gentleman. The decieving political was and will continue to be strongly disliked, No matter what people say. I see this apology as chivalry for a woman people are saying the worst possible things about….Yet, she did and does continue to pimp out her daughters. She infers, implies, misrepresents and misleads. I wholeheartedly did NOT want Mr. Letterman to apologize, Yet he is ever gracious…His heart proving to be in the right place, By apologizing to the girls lying-snaking-manipulative woman politician used/uses.
Well, I wish David hadn’t apologized for this. But, if he wanted to, fine. Now if Palin & the wingnuts continue to rant and rave, they’ll be even less effective than they already are. Much ado about nothing.
And I am still waiting for Palin to apologize for her divisive and utterly disgusting campaign tactics during the election cycle. She is a sickening woman and will never lead this county, try as she might.
Her dim-witted supporters think incidents like this show her as powerful, but instead they continue to alienate her from the rest of the nation. She continues to display herself as a petty, vindictive and attention-hungry person. Good riddance.
KJ:
There’s NO question that Willow was at the game. As for Palin supporters using the word “hater”:
