I think they should have cast Ron Paul as Gandalf. If he can get HR1207 signed into law, then surely he is one of the Maiar.

Personally I think they should have cast Ron Paul as Gandalf. Actually he and Ian look really similar. If Ron Paul can get HR1207 passed into law, surely he must be one of the Maiar.

Ok, so I heard rumor of David Bowie being King Thranduil. I don’t want David Bowie to be King Thranduil!! I want Luke Goss to be the Elvenking!! Elves are supposed to look young, not be really old singers with odd fashion tastes!! And I also want Orlando Bloom to come and at least make an appearance, even if he doesn’t say anything. That would be AMAZING! I’m also curious of who will be playing Thorin and Bilbo. I think Martin Freeman should be considered to play Bilbo. He’d be a good choice I think.

Aragorn was born in 2931. The Hobbit takes place in 2940. So yes, Aragorn IS about 10 years old.

They really missed the boat by not casting James “Jiminy” Carvilleas gollum.

LOVE the original Rankin-Bass animated Hobbit. I was totally obsessed with it as a kid…it turned me on to reading LOTR in the 3rd grade (tho I didn’t understand it till I re-read it in college).

Anybody see the animated movie “The Hobbit.” That movie went at a very brisk pace and cut A LOT of the book out, and it still managed to get 90 minutes. I think Del Toro and Jackson are smart to split it into two movies, although I am a bit wary on what this “original” material is that they are using to bridge the gaps between The Hobbit and LOTR. Great to hear the original cast is returning, for the most part. While I’d love Ian Holm in the part, he is getting a bit old. I’m actually more interested in who they’ll be casting as Beorn, one of my absolute favorite characters in the Tolkien universe.

well, what I posted previously is not incorrect. PJ and Guillermo have changed what will be in the two movies. According to Peter Jackson, this will be two movies-the Hobbit and then another movie to bridge the gap between the Hobbit and LOTR. So Gollum, Gandalf, Elrond, and Bilbo can reprise their characters in the Hobbit. Of course, it will not be Ian Holmes as he is too old to play the younger Bilbo.
And in the LOTR, Aragorn, who is a Dunedain Ranger, was 87 years old so he would not have been around 10 years old as someone posted here when Bilbo was in Rivendell. The time line in the books was changed a bit in the movies to make the age of the actors fit better.
Peter Jackson’s partner, Fran Walsh and writing partner, Philippa Boyens will also reprise their roles as screenwriters so the flavor of the movies will remain.
