Palins respond to David Letterman's explanation

David Letterman's on-air mea culpa last night regarding the now-infamous Top Ten list on his show this past Monday hasn't swayed Governor Sarah Palin.

The onetime Vice-Presidential candidate called Letterman "pathetic" in a recent radio interview, and responded through family spokeswoman Meg Stapleton today, who told the press, "The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman."

The Palin family took to their official Facebook page yesterday, with husband Todd saying "Any 'jokes' about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too."

The Governor herself posted, in part, "Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands – that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone's daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others."

Letterman defended himself last night, saying directly to the camera: "I would never, never make jokes about raping." Watch the full video here.

OMG. She’s even stupider than I thought. Why doesn’t she just keep her big mouth shut? And Todd? Does Todd even talk?

  • Miss Malevolent

Dave should just eat some crow on this one and do some better research next time.

  • Talking to Americans

Of course the Palins will not accept the apology, they are going to ride this publicity wave as long as they can – until the next one comes along. Come on, JD – Todd can do lots of things – he can ride a snowmobile, kill things and make babies!

Sarah Palin wants to run for President in 2012. She is trying to build her base of conservatives to get the Republican nomination. This is all politics.

  • Miss Malevolent

May well be about politics…just like the Obamas used any opportunity to blow out of proportion any slight made against them.
Still doesn’t excuse the fact Dave gave them the fuel for the fire.
    Dave should’ve known better.
    Do better research next time.

“contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”
Ted Haggard (Christian leader and GW Bush advisor) anyone? Both Palin’s are sick and twisted for both reading the joke as aimed at a 14 year old, and for continuing to talk as if it was aimed at a 14 year old. That’s what is truly sick to me. Dave did the big thing by apologizing, and Palin comes back and sounds like a baby.

  • Miss Malevolent

Dave didn’t apologize. Watched all eight minutes…didn’t apologize once.
“I didn’t mean the 14 year old” isn’t an apology. It’s reasoning after the fact, but it isn’t an apology.
And honestly, if a person says, “I’m sorry you took it that way” isn’t an apology…it is saying, “take the stick out of your butt, cause you’re too sensitive get over it.”
I think people honestly don’t know what an actual apology is these days.
When one apologizes “sincerly” (operative word) it is made without qualifiers.

I think it was really inappropriate for Dave to say those things. But, I think the Palins are taking it just a little bit too far. I really don’t think he meant any of those things by the “joke.” I don’t think the implications of the joke as rape being discusses by an elderly gentleman about a young girl even crossed his mind. He was just trying to take a jab at the family with a cheap joke.

I am a letterman fan, but he goofed on this one and he should offer a sincere apology – not a poor excuse.

  • Max

The joke wasn’t about the 14 year old, it was about her older, slutty sister. Get over it.

  • EntertainmentBlogger

Ridiculous. She should worry more about her teenage kids having unprotected sex than what comedians have to say. Her priorities are ALL OFF. In my opinion, I don’t think he needed to apologize.
BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK?? Take today’s poll here:

And while there, take the other polls still open!!

  • meepos

He NEVER, EVER, NEVER EVER said anything about Willow Palin. Shame on Sarah Palin for, once again, milking her children for political and social gain.

  • J

Palin is taking this thing too far. Sticking up for your kids is fine, but defaming Letterman like this is too much. To equate him with perverts and sex offenders is just beyond the pale and shameful.

  • Tim

Considering how generally idiotic Sarah Palin is (on every sibject), it’s not surprising that she didn’t understand the joke was about her (adult) daughter. You know the one that is famous for having unprotected sex with her football player ex. On a football field. Which makes the joke funny – that’s where the baseball field comes in. It was perfectly clear to me. But, hey, it won;t the the first time the Palins lied this week, or today. Or this hour. I think it’s pathological (both the stupidity and the lying).

  • Martin Haro

I agree that Dave didn’t apologize – he clarified.
Clearly, the Palins are too dense to understand he more than likely meant the unwed teen mom who has put herself out there as public figure speaking on issues (teen pregnancy) she knows about, not the younger teen.
If anyone’s making a big deal out of this joke for a boost, it’s the Palins. Kudos to their shrewd ways.
