Star Trek and Lost overlord J.J. Abrams has been asked by Tom Cruise to be a producer on Mission: Impossible 4 according to the new issue of TV Guide (you can see a scan of the relevant page here.) Abrams was the director of 2006's Mission: Impossible III but it is unclear as to whether he will also return in that capacity. In the TV Guide article the producer-director is quoted as saying, "Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea."

This is good news! MI3 was the best MI.
I’m all too excited about this. I agree with you Tom, well maybe not about your platform heels. But, this guy can do no wrong. His writing team, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and his composer, Michael Giacchino, do nothing but enhance him. I cannot wait to see it…Especially the next Star Trek film…

Enough with the Tom Cruise versions already, I want Abrams to re-visit the old school “Mission: Impossible” from the 1960′s. I want to see these characters – Phelps, Cinnamon, Barney, Rollin, & Willy saving the world again. The plot / mission could go something like this: “Your mission Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to find Bin Laden and kill him.” Or how about this plot idea: “Your mission Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to locate the American Journalist from North Korea and bring them back alive.” Come on Mr. Abrams, don’t let me down. And after “Mission Impossible”, he can work on the “Star Trek” sequel – “Khan Must Die”, nuff said.
