It's official. American Idol season 8 champ Kris Allen has been signed, as expected, by 19 Recordings, and his debut album will be licensed to Jive Records for a late fall release, the companies announced today.
Hawk-eyed Idol fans had already noticed that Allen's initial single, the Kara DioGuardi-penned victory anthem "No Boundaries," was released under the 19/Jive banner; "No Boundaries" currently ranks No. 23 on Billboard's Hot 100, while Allen's remake of Kanye West's "Heartless" sits at No. 33.
"As exciting as the last few months have been, I'm really looking forward to what is next," Allen said in a release. "I'm very grateful to be working with Simon Fuller and his team at 19 Entertainment, along with Barry Weiss and Jive Records on my debut album. Everyone's been asking me what it's going to sound like. It will be very similar to what you heard from me on the show — definitely in the pop/rock genre. I can't wait to get started!" Allen sang the National Anthem last night before Game 2 of the NBA finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic.

I am so happy for Kris. But I worry about Simon Fuller’s comments a little bit. He didn’t talk about his creative abilities very much but did mention his good looks. I was on team Kris because even though he didn’t make a spectacle of himself, when he played his instruments, arranged the songs so brilliantly, and then performed with such passion I thought he was genius! I always felt like he was singing to me, and that just blew me away. In the name of current, respected singer/songwriters like Norah Jones, Fiest, Death Cab for Cutie, etc… I am hoping that Jive will want this type of Genre on their label, and give him the creative freedom he deserves. PRAY!

The way that the people associated with the show and 19 have been treating Kris, I’d have thought that he might become the first winner to NOT get a deal from 19. I thought that maybe they’d try to pass him off to a “lesser” label under their umbrella. I hope that they let him make the record that HE wants, as Kris has shown that he understands current music, and is not only a good singer, but a good musician. I hope that they don’t give him pablum music like they have done with many of the other Idols.
I bet he sales under 500,000 copies and is dropped by his lable in less then 2 years.
Yay for Kris! Now hopefully we will hear about Adam (who appears to have been signed to RCA) in the next few days, and Allison (who appears to have also been signed to Jive).
Adam, Allison, and Kris were my favorites all season (in that order), and I am so happy that they are actually getting a chance to make albums.

BTW: I was a Kris/Adam fan, but after seeing the way that Adam’s fans are acting, I probably will not buy anything from him anymore. I find the way that his fans stalks Kris’s news stories and write bad reviews is deplorable and a very bad reflection of him.

I am very happy for Kris. He is a very good artist and deserves his record deal. I am an Adam fan and voted for him all the way. I would never put down Kris. That is not Adam’s style. He is proud of Kris and would never wish anyone, fan or not, to put down or criticize Kris. Punishing Adam for something some rude and tackless fans have done, makes no sense. Kris and Adam are close friends. There is room for all types of music and music stars…. How boring would it be otherwise?? I Love Filet Mignon, but I certainly can enjoy a Porterhouse too!
