UPDATE: Megan Fox as Lara Croft?

Categories: Movies

Meganfoxlaracroft_lCould Megan Fox replace Angelina Jolie as the star of the Tomb Raider franchise? Terminator Salvation executive producer Dan Lin dropped a bombshell to about.com at the premiere of the new Christian Bale film, saying that he’s planning to reboot Lara Croft as an origin story. The two previous Tomb Raider films grossed more than $431 million combined, worldwide. This reboot would inevitably mean casting someone younger than Jolie, and that has lead to rampant fanboy speculation (read: panting, drooling) that Transformers beauty Fox, 23, might be at the top of the list to take on the role. Right now, though, it’s merely that: speculation. Lin tells EW.com that the script hasn’t been written — they’re just beginning the search for a writer — so casting discussions are, at least, months in the future. That said, Lin did add that it would be a "no brainer" to consider Fox for the role. For now, though, fanboys will just have to wait … and dream.

Barbra Streisand writing a memoir?

Categories: Books

Barbra Streisand has signed a deal with Viking for an illustrated book called "A Passion for Design," which will detail her thoughts and memories on the design and construction of her dream home in Malibu, California, the Associated Press reports. While this book, scheduled to be published in fall 2010, will only contain about 50,000 words of text, another Streisand book may be on the horizon. The 67-year-old singer/icon has been quietly mulling over whether to finally write her memoir. She’s been working on chapters in longhand. But will she ever publish it? "I go back and forth," Streisand told the AP. "Do I really want to write about my life? Do I really want to relive my life? I’m not sure." Ironically, Streisand’s former lover, Jon Peters, got into hot water last week over his proposed memoir and canceled his book deal with Harper Collins. (He’ll still write the book, however.) Peters produced one of Streisand’s biggest hits, A Star is Born, in 1976. Streisand is currently married to actor James Brolin.

NYC's popular tax credit program to be renewed

Categories: Movie Biz, Television

New York City officials are working in Albany this week to introduce new legislation that would modify the tax credit program and secure it as an incentive to bring more film and television projects to the city. The Big Apple’s original tax credit allotment — $50 million for four years — wasso popular that the money ran out after just about a year and had to be replenished in 2006. The recent renewal would provide an additional $24 million per year, which would ensure that the credits remain in place through 2011. Under this new proposed legislation, the credit rate would be reduced from five percent to four percent, and there would be an established a cap of $250,000 for each qualified film or episode of a TV series.

'Slumdog' dad storms out on Danny Boyle

Categories: Movies

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson met with the families of the two impoverished child stars who’ve been evicted from their Mumbai homes in recent months. But the father of Rubina Ali, 9, stormed out of the meeting, angrily claiming that the children had been abandoned by the filmmakers. "It has been five to six months," Rafiq Qureshi told the AP. "Everything is available in Mumbai if you have the money. If you really want to get us a house you can get us a house in two days."

Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, were handpicked from the infamous slums to play the young stars in the Oscar-winning film. "We’ve been trying for a long time to move them into legal accommodations," Boyle said.

The filmmakers set up a trust aimed at ensuring the children get proper homes and decent education, and they have pledged to spend up to $100,000 to buy the two families new apartments, according to the article.
