Disney andPixar plan to create a new animation studio this fall inVancouver, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The studio will focus on Pixar’s most popular characters— like Buzz and Woody from Toy Story and Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars. The decision to head north was due to tax incentives, a local talent pool, and proximity to Pixar. "The operation will be small in size and dedicated to producingshort-form quality computer animation for theme parks, DVDs,television and theatrical exhibition," Disney/Pixar president EdCatmull told THR.

Samuel L. Jackson to produce and star in African pirate movie
Samuel L. Jackson will headline a movie based on the life of pirate negotiator Andrew Mwangura, Variety reports. Mwangura, a freelance journalist, runs the Seafarers’ Assistance Programme, a nonprofit that brokers the safety and freedom of hijacked ships off the Eastern coast of Africa. Last year, he made headlines for negotiating a high-price deal between pirates and the owners of a Ukranian ship secretly carrying weapons bound for the Sudan.Jackson’s Uppity Films is teaming up with producer Andras Hamori’s H20 Motion Pictures for the project. The two previously co-produced the thriller Formula 51, and are reportedly working on an adaptation of the novella Running Wild.
Aisha Tyler gets a talk show pilot
Actress-comedian Aisha Tyler, who most recently starred in Bedtime Stories, will headline her own talk show, The Aisha Tyler Show, for ABC. The pilot, which is being described as a cross between daytime and late-night talk shows, will include comedic political commentary, produced segments, and an Internet-related aspect (viewers will be able to talk to Tyler through sites like Facebook and Twitter). ABC sources are hoping that that Tyler will make it to syndication or cable.
'Saw' director to take on cult classic 'Mother's Day'
Darren Lynn Bousman, who has directed three films in the Sawfranchise, has signed on to helm a remake of Charles Kaufman’s 1980 horror flick Mother’s Day, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The reboot will see the evil family from the original— two brothers who engaged in murderand rape on a campsite to impress their maniac mother—return to the house where they grew up and terrify the new owners and their guests. Producers hope to release the film in time for Mother’s Day 2010.
Minka Kelly to become a 'Roommate' to Leighton Meester
Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly has joined the cast of Screen Gems’ upcoming thriller The Roommate, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film, which also stars Aly Michalka of the pop group Aly and AJ, Twilight‘s Cam Gigandet, and 90210‘s Matt Lanter, will center on a psychotic college freshmen (Leighton Meester) who becomes obsessed with her new roomie (Kelly).
Vin Diesel to star in 'The Wheelman'
Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel will headline The Wheelman, a Paramount Pictures adaptation of the Ubisoft videogame of the same name, according to Variety. John Singleton will direct the movie, which will follow a top-notch driver (Diesel) who emerges from retirement to help a woman. The videogame debuted last month, with Diesel serving as producer and voicing its main character.
Keanu Reeves to star in 'Dr. Jekyll' update
Keanu Reeves is attached to star in the Universal update of Robert Louis Stevenson’s "The StrangeCase of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," according to the Hollywood Reporter. JustinHaythe (Revolutionary Road) will write the screenplay.
Activision considering possible 'Guitar Hero' TV series
There’s talk of making the video game Guitar Hero into a reality TV show and/or a real-life concert tour, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Activision Blizzard, the video game publisher behind Guitar Hero, as well as World of Warcraft and Call of Duty, is considering turning some of its properties into TV or film projects.
Judge denies Roman Polanski's request to dismiss sex charges
Variety is reporting that a Los Angeles judge denied a request today to throw out a three-decades old conviction against Roman Polanski for having sex with a minor because the director refused to personally appear in court. Polanski’s attorney had tried to argue that the director’s presence in the court was irrelevant to the dismissal motion. The recent HBO documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired revealed new information about possible judicial misconduct in Polanski’s original trial, resulting in the latest proceedings. The 75-year-old Polanski, who lives in France, is considered a fugitive for fleeing the country following his 1977 conviction for unlawful sexual intercourse.

ABC gives early pickup to 'Modern Family'
ABC has given an early thumbs-up to Modern Family, a new comedy from Back to You executive producers Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan, Variety is reporting. The network has ordered 13 episodes of the sitcom, which follows three families through a movie maker’s eyes. The show stars Ed O’Neill (John from Cincinnati) and Julie Bowen (Boston Legal) and will debut this fall.
