KFC to mail out rain checks for Oprah chicken freebie

Categories:

Seems you can have your chicken and eat it too…albeit a little later than expected. After hordes of hungry Oprah fans were turned away from KFC outlets across the country earlier this week, the fast-food chain is now sending out rain checks to appease them.

On Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey announced on her show that coupons for a free Kentucky Grilled Chicken dinner would be available on her website. But the demand was so overwhelming that KFC could not accommodate everyone. Traffic near a KFC in Greensboro, N.C., created such a hazard on Wednesday that police ended up blocking access to the restaurant. And in New York City and elsewhere, disgruntled customers staged protests.

According to KFC, the company has never had such a response to a special-meal offer. "It’s unprecedented in our more than 50 years," said KFC spokeswoman Laurie Schalow told the AP. "It beats anything we’ve ever done."

Mia Farrow ends Darfur hunger strike, passes baton to Richard Branson

Categories:

On doctor’s orders, Mia Farrow is ending the fast she began 12 days ago to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan. "I have been instructed by my doctor to stop my fast immediately due to health concerns — including possible seizures," said Farrow in a statement. "I am fortunate. The women and children and men I am fasting for do not have this option."

Airline and music industry tycoon Sir Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin, plans to take over where Farrow left off and launch his own Darfur-inspired fast today. Branson intends to forgo food for three days in an effort to convince world leaders to restore international aid to the refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan. "I’m honored to be taking over the fast for the next three days from Mia Farrow in her courageous stance to support the people of Darfur," Branson said in a statement. "Over a year ago I travelled to Darfur and was horrified with the stories people of all ages shared with us. We cannot stand and watch as people suffer."

Liam Neeson talks about grieving for Natasha Richardson

Categories:

Liam Neeson talked publicly for the first time about the loss of his wife, Natasha Richardson, last night at the British Consulate in New York, where he was granted an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Queens University Belfast. Irish Central, the website that first reported the skiing accident that claimed Richardson’s life in March, reports that Neeson quoted poet Paul Muldoon at the ceremony, saying that art "builds from pain, from misery, from a deep-seated hurt, a monument to the human heart that shines like a golden dome among roofs rain-glazed and leaden." Neeson said his time at the university taught him an important lesson: "I think it is a message that a university always gives its students in the end: It’s time to move on, get on with your life. I got on with mine, and I’m still getting on."

Presidential press conferences angering network executives

Categories: Politics, Television

According to The Hollywood Reporter, executives at the major broadcast networks are becoming increasingly upset at President Obama’s frequent primetime news conferences. The past three preemptions have reportedly cost the networks around $30 million in advertising revenue so far this year. The broadcasters are hoping the White House will begin holding conferences outside of primetime hours, and are planning to use Fox’s refusal to air the April 29 conference as precedent to reject future requests that do not address urgent breaking news.
