'NCIS' spinoff, Alex O'Loughlin's 'Three Rivers' among anticipated CBS pickups

In a weekend filled with the broadcast networks furiously renewing shows and greenlighting new fall series, Variety is reporting that CBS, which will officially unveil its fall 2009 line-up on Wednesday in New York City, has given the OK to five new dramas: The Good Wife, starring Julianna Margulies; Three Rivers, starring Moonlight alum Alex O’Loughlin; medical drama Miami Trauma starring Jeremy Northam; an untitled drama about U.S. Attorneys; and the much-anticipated NCIS spin-off starring Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J. On the comedy side, Accidentally on Purpose, starring Jenna Elfman, is also expected to get the go ahead when the schedule is announced.

Ricky Gervais back in business with HBO for animated show

Comedian Ricky Gervais has signed a deal with HBO that will bring to life an animated series based on his popular podcast series, according to Variety. The series, to be titled The Ricky Gervais Show, will feature the comedian and longtime collaborator Stephen Merchant — both of whom were behind HBO’s Extras. The plot of Gervais is set to focus on the happenings in the life of their friend, Karl Pilkington, who figured prominently in the podcast series. HBO has ordered 13 episodes of The Ricky Gervais Show, which is expected to appear on the pay-cable network in early 2010.

Peter Berg in talks to direct big-screen 'Battleship'

Friday Night Lights‘ Peter Berg is in talks to direct a movie adaptation of the Hasbro board game Battleship for Universal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, plot details are being kept under wraps, but the studio expects it to be “an epic naval action adventure.” No news on casting, or which lucky actor will get to say “You sank my battleship!”

'Billy Elliot,' 'Ruined' collect Broadway's Drama Desk Awards

Billy Elliot — the story of a coal miner’s son who just wants to dance — took home the best musical award, as well as nine other kudos, at the Great White Way’s 54th annual Drama Desk Awards, which were announced May 17. Ruined, a Pulitzer Prize-winning drama set during an African civil war, won the prize for best play.

Cynthia Nixon engaged to longtime girlfriend

During a rally for gay rights in New York City over the weekend, Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon announced she is engaged to girlfriend Christine Marinoni, according to a report by E! News. At the rally, which was held to draw support for same-sex unions in New York state, Nixon revealed she became engaged last month. The couple has been together since late 2003. Nixon and her Sex and the City compatriots — Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, and Kristin Davis — are set to begin filming the sequel to the big-screen smash later this summer.

Sean Penn in talks to play middle-aged rocker

Sean Penn is in talks to star in Italian director Paolo Sorrentino’s English-language debut, This Must Be the Place. Variety says Penn’s character, a rich middle-aged rock star, attempts to find the ex-Nazi war criminal who executed his father. The film would be shot after Penn’s previous commitments: The Three Stooges, Cartel, and Fair Game.

America Ferrera, Forest Whitaker, Carlos Mencia line up for comedy

Ugly Betty‘s America Ferrera, Forest Whitaker, and comedian Carlos Mencia have been cast in an untitled family comedy written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar), Variety reports. Whitaker and Mencia play two fathers who have to work together, in spite of their cultural differences, to plan the wedding of their engaged children in less than two weeks. Cameras roll next month in Los Angeles.

Drew Carey signs first-look deal with CBS Television Studios

Drew Carey, host of The Price is Right, has signed a two-year first-look deal with CBS Television Studios. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it puts him in a position to exec produce and appear on scripted and non-scripted series that his production company, International Mammoth TV, may develop.

Milla Jovovich joins De Niro, Norton in 'Stone'

Milla Jovovich has been cast alongside Robert De Niro and Ed Norton in the thriller Stone, Variety reports. She’ll play the wife of Norton’s character, a convicted arsonist, who asks her to have an affair with his parole officer (De Niro). Angus MacLachlan (Junebug) wrote the script; John Curran (The Painted Veil) will direct.

'Farrah's Story' draws nearly 9 million viewers

Farrah Fawcett proved she’s still a major draw for TV audiences when her special, Farrah’s Story, attracted 8.9 million viewers to NBC Friday night, according to a press release issued by the network. Although not the no. 1 network show for the evening (CBS’s Numb3rs outdistanced Fawcett, with 9.6 million people watching the procedural drama’s season finale), it was still NBC’s highest-rated Friday night program in a year, excluding the Olympics. Farrah’s Story, shot with Fawcett’s own video camera, documents the Charlie’s Angels vet’s two-and-a-half-year fight with anal cancer.
