Despite rumors spreading rapidly this morning, actor Patrick Swayze has not died. "This is to confirm that Patrick Swayze did not pass away this morning contrary to severely reckless reports stemming from a radio station in Jacksonville, Florida," his publicist said in a statement. "Swayze is alive, well and is enjoying his life and he continues to respond to treatment." Swayze, 56, was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in January 2008. In July of that year, he began working 12-hour days, while undergoing chemotherapy, on the A&E drama series The Beast. The show debuted in January 2009. The season finale aired last month.

Mel Gibson settles legal dispute with 'Passion of the Christ' writer
Mel Gibson has reached a settlement in a legal dispute with the writer of his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ, BBC News reports. Benedict Fitzgerald sued Gibson for $10 million last year, claiming the filmmaker understated the budget of the film and should have given him a higher salary. Details of the settlement were not disclosed. Fitzgerald claimed Gibson told him the movie budget was about $7 million, when in fact it came to between $25 and $50 million; he also accused Gibson of refusing him more payments when the film became an unexpected phenomenon, earning $611 million worldwide.
Colin Firth and Kevin Spacey to star in George Orwell adaptation
Colin Firth and Kevin Spacey are attached to star in a film adaptation of George Orwell’s Catalonia directed by Hugh Hudson, Variety reports. Bob Ellis will write the screenplay, based on Orwell’s book about his own trip with his wife, Eileen, to Barcelona to fight Stalinism. Orwell joined the Anarchist Brigade and fought in the Spanish Civil War under charismatic commander Georges Kopp.
'Bridget Jones's Diary' set as London musical
Bridget Jones’s Diary is heading to the British stage as a musical co-written by the book’s author, Helen Fielding, Variety reports. The film’s producer, Working Title, is developing the project following the smash success of its stage adaptation of Billy Elliot. The role of Miss Jones has yet to be cast, but Renee Zellweger (who played her in the movies) won’t be reprising her for the stage. Jones is likely to be ready in 2011.
George Clooney to star in 'A Very Private Gentleman'
George Clooney will star in A Very Private Gentleman, an adaptation of the Martin Booth novel to be directed by Anton Corbijin and written by Rowan Joffe, Variety reports. He’ll play an assassin who spends time in an Italian town before completing a final mission, making friendships and personal entanglements that complicate said assignment. The announcement comes at the Cannes film festival on the heels of Overture Films’ pick-up of Clooney’s satire The Men Who Stare at Goats.
Steven Spielberg to produce Martin Luther King biopic
Martin Luther King Jr. will get the biopic treatment from Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks, Variety reports. The civil rights leader, assassinated in 1968 at 39, copyrighted his speeches and books; this project will be the first film authorized by his estate to create a definitive scripted portrait of his life.
NBC renews 'Law & Order' for record-tying 20th season
Law & Order will tie Gunsmoke‘s record 20-year run with NBC’s renewal for next season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The 16-episode season will fulfill creator Dick Wolf’s openly discussed desire to match the Western’s run. The announcement is expected to come as part of the Peacock’s unveiling of its fall season later today.
Mariska Hargitay fully recovered from stunt injury
Mariska Hargitay tells People that she has fully recovered from the partially collapsed lung that first sidelined her from filming NBC’s Law & Order: SVU last January, and again in March. She also revealed the origin of the injury: "I’ve been doing my own stunts on the show for 10 years," the 45-year-old actress explained. "I fell wrong, basically. I collapsed my lung doing a stunt."
Kanye West pleads not guilty in paparazzi run-in
Kanye West has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor vandalism, battery and grand theft charges stemming from an Sept. 11, 2008 tussle with a paparazzi at a Los Angeles airport, People reports. West and his road manager, Don Crawley, who also pleaded not guilty, were arrested last fall after allegedly smashing a photographer’s camera while trying to make a flight to Honolulu. Their next hearing is set for July 15.
Dolla, Atlanta rapper, killed at L.A. shopping mall
CNN reports that Atlanta-based rapper Dolla (nĂ© Roderick Anthony Burton II), 21, was shot and killed outside of Los Angeles’ Beverly Center shopping mall just after 3 p.m. PDT on Monday. On Tuesday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, of Georgia, was arrested on suspicion of murder at Los Angeles International Airport, and was being held on $1 million bail.
The shooting reportedly occurred during a group melee, possibly also involving a knife. Dolla is perhaps best known for the single "Feelin’ Myself," which was featured in the 2006 dance film Step Up.
