'Jon & Kate Plus 8': In violation of child labor laws?

There’s more trouble brewing in the Jon and Kate Gosselin universe. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry confirms that it is investigating TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 to determine whether the reality show violates child labor laws. "Our Bureau of Labor Law Compliance is conducting an investigation," spokesman Christopher Manlove tells EW. "Because it is ongoing, I can’t provide information about the investigation." (News of the probe was first reported by Usmagazine.com.)

In a statement, a rep for TLC said the channel "fully complies" with all laws: "For an extended period of time, we have been engaged in cooperative discussions and supplied all requested information to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. We will continue to engage the appropriate officials and meet any standards or regulations that are applicable to TLC productions."

They aren’t being required to “work.” If what we’ve been told from the start is true, they go about their lives – there just happen to be cameras present too.

layoff this family. They are going through the same problems many other people are going through without the reality show!!! People are so envious that these people are not having to rely on public assistance to get by. Yes, they have been afforded extras, as the tummy tuck, hair transplant, and wonderful trips. But, through it all, Kate has acknowledged that they were blessed and conveyed this to their children. What they received was a small salary compared to what other actors (and yes, child actors) receive. Leave them alone!!!

    To Linda:
Lay off this family? All they do is film themselves so we can watch! If they want us not to have an opinion, TURN THE CAMERAS OFF AND GET A REAL JOB.
Children should not perform for cameras in their home as toddlers! They need NORMAL childhoods – where people don’t film their birthday parties, watch them cry from constipation, or have a screaming fit.

We the public were invited into their lives. I really don’t think people had a problem with the freebies they’ve been given. It is the way the children have been treated that have raised concerns. Although, in regards to the freebie, I’m sure the laid off workers from around this country wouldn’t mind a few freebies themsselves — without having to rely on public assistance. Time for Kate and Jon to get real jobs. Let the kids be kids….

leave them alone. they are not doing any labor. And everyone goes through those things, so get over it.

People actually watch that junk? That’s the amazing bit.

  • Free the Gosselin 8

The children need a court ordered advocate to become involved. And new laws need to be written. YES the children are exploited. Every single day of their lives.

Don’t be fooled, Kate and the TLC PR team are leaking every bad story about Jon, who is ready for this “reality” show to be over because it has turned into a business. Kate and TLC want her to be portrayed as the hardworking, good mother, but they both have millions at stake if the show doesn’t go on, so they want America to be ok with Kate + 8 – Jon. She is no role model. They had no business using fertility treatments when they had no means to support their family and have been out to get freebies from the start. Aunt Jodi and Beth Carson were the only two people I ever saw actually looking out for the Gosselin children on the show, and they have mysteriously disappeared. Now, with Jodi and Kevin speaking out, we finally know why. I hope Jon gets full custody and Kate realizes that kids are not a commodity. Shame on anyone who buys the Gosselin brand.

please…kate is a hard working mother. she takes great care of her kids and so does jon!!!!! maybe you should watch all the shows…aunt jodi just wants attention!!!!!!!!!

  • go

wow…those who think kate is a good mom. maybe you should actually watch the show.

  • tonya

i do watch the show and she is a great mother…what show do you watch? don’t be jealous because she has what you want…..

Kate is a harridan that spends her time traveling these last few years. She treats her husband like a disobediant child. She belittles him constantly. I watched a special of clips from the past, and they were each commenting.. each clip of him doing something wrong, he appologized, and said what he could have done better. Each clip her doing something wrong, she turned it around and made it all Jon’s fault, and she proceded to ream him for each clip.
I just think it was only a matter of time before he got tired of it all.
As for jobs, they both had great jobs, and good earning potential. He had always worked, until she started traveling for her books. She is an RN and went back to work when the younger kids were one. He does something with computers.. don’t recall what. It’s because of the show that they are not working at their repective careers.

IT’s not about good or bad tv, it’s about children being exploited. Sorry, but, when parent’s stop making choices that are in the best interest of their children, somebody should step in. My granddaughter and I loved watching the show together the first couple of season when the show was pure. Now, I would never let her watch that crap. I feel so bad for those kids.

  • trudy

the show is entertaining. if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. simple as that.
