Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane plans to enter his animated comedy in the Emmy’s best comedy category, putting it up against a group that is traditionally all live-action, according to a report in Variety. Although animated comedies like The Simpsons have tried the same thing before, MacFarlane believes this could be the year for animation to break through the glass ceiling. "Wedon’t produce our show the that way SpongeBob does," MacFarlane told Variety."We’re much more analogous to traditional sitcoms. Our writers don’tcome from animation; they come from comedies. I hear people all thetime tell me that they love The Office, 30 Rock, and our show. Thenwhy are we not all competing in the same world?"

Well, let’s see what they are competing against. There’s 30 Rock. And, ummm, well 30 Rock is a great show apparently (although I haven’t ever seen it). But it has that cute nerd chick who did the Sarah Palin immitation – I like her. Dammit – what’s her name.
Oh – and there’s the Big Bang Theory with the cute chick and the guy who used to be on Roseanne. I’ve heard good things about that show too.
Is According to Jim still on? Two and Half Men? I suppose they could get a nomination – they’ve been around a long time so they MUST be good.
I had a girlfriend force me to watch Julia Louis Dreyfus’ show. Sorry – no Elaine dance – I couldn’t watch. I miss Kramer until the idiot opened his mouth with all those racial slurs.
So yeah – I think Family Guy has a chance. Deserves a nomination at least.

Hear, hear! Although I would have expected The Simpsons to have done better in this category…
Uh, isn’t it a prerequisite for a comedy award to actually be funny? That kind of leaves Family Guy out unless they are submitting episodes from before it got canceled. The new eps have pretty much sucked.
Seth whaterhisname is has let the MILLIONS he gets from professional plagarism get to his bloated head! Family Fat Guy is not funny – the only funny episode was when people told Seth to his face this show was crap and crude – I do like Family Dad though, plagirism does not reek through that show as obviously as Family Crap
American Dad I meant – whatevs – its AT TIMES funny and the story lines are somewhat original, so points earned there.
I loved Family Guy back in the day, but it got too crude even for my twisted sense of humor. Like South Park, it’s crossed over into mean-spirited “humor” – not my thing. I like edginess, but not downright nastiness; we already have enough of that in the real world.

Has he ever watched his show? I’m not saying some of the gags aren’t funny because they are but thats all that show is. It’s a bunch of strung together gags and cut aways held together by about 5 minutes of an actual storyline. How does that make in the same line as 30 Rock or the Office or even more traditional sitcoms? It doesn’t.
I would have been more impressed if Seth had done this year’s ago, back when Family Guy was at the center of pop culture and the show was actually funny…the newer episodes, particularly this season, have been unbearable. I find myself laughing out loud once or twice per ep, whereas in past seasons I couldn’t stop laughing.
The Simpsons have also slid in recent years on the laugh-o-meter, but their plots seem more relevant and the laughs are still there. But if any animated show should enter the Emmy race, it’s American Dad. What was once the WORST animated show on TV has, over the past few years, become the funniest AND one of the smartest. I still wouldn’t rank it with The Office or 30 Rock, but among animation I think its the tops right now.
Here is the problem Seth, your show isn’t as funny as “South Park” and that is the real reason you don’t want to compete in animated where you should be. Also, “Reno 911!” even “Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword” from Comedy Central were better than your show and probably won’t be nominated. Nor will “It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia” which is 1000x funnier than “Family Guy”. Just be happy that you’re filthy rich and leave your little scatalogical exercise where it belongs. I would even be willing to bet that “Eastbound and Down” from HBO won’t get nominated and also Shakespeare compared to your show.
Based on their recent episodes, I believe that The Simpsons have a better shot of making it in the comedy category. The Simpsons has been on a roll since it began airing in HD.
Family Guy is the best show on TV so this is sooooo good news.
Oh, and South Pak isn’t cool and was never cool.
I’m just gonna throw it out there that no one commenting on this show right now is within the demographic of the show. That show is brilliant, hysterical and risky. WAY better than the Simpsons have been in the past 5 years. Seth MacFarlane absolutely deserves an Emmy!!! And really BobbyC??? Two and a Half Men and According to Jim??? Those shows are horrible! Never mind that they follow the same plot of every other sitcom out there. Family Guy is original.
