Phil Spector: Prosecutor asks for 19-year sentence

A Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney requested a sentence of 19-years-to-life for legendary music producer Phil Spector, who was convicted last month of second-degree murder in the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson, the Associated Press reports. Spector, 69, was found guilty on April 13. Clarkson, who had acted in the cult film Barbarian Queen, was killed in the foyer of Spector’s mansion, by a gunshot fired into her mouth, in 2003. Spector’s first trial for the crime ended in a jury deadlock. The conviction came from the second trial.

The maximum sentence for second-degree murder is 15 years, but prosecutor Alan Jackson asked that the judge add four years to Spector’s sentence because the crime included the personal use of a gun. In addition to prison time, Jackson requested that Spector pay a minimum of $26,500 to Clarkson’s family to compensate them for funeral costs and mental health care. The Clarkson family has sued Spector for damages as well. Spector is scheduled to be sentenced on May 29.

If “the maximum sentence for second-degree murder is 15 years” how can the prosecution request a sentence of “19 years to LIFE”? Even with the additional 4 years the maximum sentence can only be 19 years assuming you are correct about the maximum sentence for the crime. Or did you mean the maximum sentence is “15 years to life”?

    Good.
Too bad they didn’t ask for 20.
    Or more.

Phil Spector is a menace to society, even at his age. The older he gets, the more senile and vicious he becomes. He should NEVER be released, EVER, until he is dispatched to the pit of h.e.l.l. Thank GOD there was a jury willing to impose a just verdict for the brutal cold-blooded murder of a beautiful YOUNG woman.

So will he have time to record a version of Paul Hardcastle’s “Nineteen” before he goes in, or will he stick to his last hit? ( http://www.theblogwithtwolegs.co.uk/2009/04/phil-spectors-latest-hit_15.html )

Great article. I can¡¯t wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
