'Medium' gets picked up by CBS

Categories: Television

CBS announced its Fall 2009 lineup on Wednesday morning, and Medium, which was just dropped by NBC after five seasons, has found a new home. Confirming a report by EW’s Michael Ausiello, the Patricia Arquette starrer, produced by CBS TV Studios, moves to Fridays on the Eye, between Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs.

After NBC cochairman Ben Silverman had axed the show, labeling it "an aging franchise, without a single fan letter, with no passion," CBS TV Studios had issued a sternly worded statement: "NBC’s cancellation of Medium is inexplicable to us," it said. "The ratings don’t lie: Medium outperforms many of NBC’s renewed shows."

Great news! I never understood why NBC treated Medium like a stepchild.
I hope CBS plans to give Medium a full season.

Such great news! Medium is one of my favorite shows, and I have a feeling that CBS will treat it a lot better than NBC ever did. Thank you CBS!

Great news! I never understood why NBC treated Medium like an unloved stepchild.
I hope this means we’ll finally get a FULL season.

Note to Ben Silverman: DUMB MOVE! I may not be home Friday night watching MEDIUM. But you better believe the TiVo will be fired up capturing each and every episode. I may even end up watching it some night at 10pm — while you are AGING Jay Leno. Have fun with that.

I couldnt believe that NBC dropped Medium and then the co-chairman said it was aging? Are you kidding me? What planet do these over paid execs live on?? It’s a fantastic show and I will be more than happy to move over to the Eye!

Yay! I was worried when I read that NBC had axed the show. I LOVE Medium and my NBC show count is now officially down to one: 30 Rock.

So glad to hear about this…I think this show will work well in that slot after Ghost Whisperer. Medium is a great show…I loved the ep last week with Jeffrey Tambor taking over as Patricia Arquette…his delivery was spot on. Smart move, CBS, and Friday nights will be even better with this change.

How appropriate. Medium is back from the dead.

    YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ben Silverman is an idiot. There’s a reason why NBC is doing so badly. The passion for a show like “Medium” is in it’s writing, acting and superb storytelling. It’s ratings were solid– us fans followed it wherever the network decided to dump it. Is it all about the fan letters and buzz? quality and ratings arent enough? some of us have family and jobs! Good old CBS picked this up and I’m sure will have the best Friday night numbers they have had in along time!! thanks CBS!!!

Yeah, Ben Silverman, we don’t want an aging franchise on our network, just like we don’t want an aging late night host 5 nights a week during primetime…oh wait…
CBS is not exaggerating when they say Medium outperforms shows NBC renewed. I’m not sure what NBC has against Medium; it’s always treated it horribly even though it tends to rescue the timeslot once they stick it in as a midseason replacement. The Dubois family is one of the best portrayals of a family on TV, and I’m thrilled that CBS feels the same way. It’ll be a good partner for Ghost Whisperer, even if that is a lot of ghosts for one evening.

Medium fans are loyal! I don’t know anyone who doesn’t watch that show and LOVE it! So we don’t write letters (well I did after it was cancelled yesterday)…I am SO glad that CBS saved Medium and will watch faithfully..so long NBC

CBS to NBC: I slap thee in the face!!!

Thanks NBC, that cuts my show list down to 1 show on your network, Law and Order, while CBS just added another show to my roster.
    Morons.

  • Fan Letter

Well that’s BS! So they dumped it because they didn’t get any fan letters? Whatever! They got rid of it because the audience wasn’t made up entirely of vapid, screaming, teenagers. I’m so glad CBS picked up the show.

  • MWA

Yay! Medium will ahve more viewers on CBS…everyone knows that. They are the kings of advertising, and can easily snag new viewers.

  • Lisa

NBC is going to stand for No Body Cares if they keep getting rid of good shows. Putting Leno on at 10:00 pm every night shows you what morons they are.

I am so relieved with the news that CBS is picking up Medium because it is a truly good show, love Joe and Allison together!

  • darclyte

So, I’m guessing that this means that Medium will now have a full season (depending on ratings) as opposed to the partial seasons that NBC gave it the past couple of years. Is that correct?

  • BrandonK

Well, I wouldn’t write a fan letter, but I’ll definitely be watching it on CBS.

  • David4

CBS is right, it does better than most NBC shows.

  • fairiequeen

Wrong – wrong – wrong – Medium has a lot of fans – its just in a wrong time slot – putting it after Ghost Whisperer is a GENIUS idea – So many of the GW lovers cant stay up for Medium. Now both can be seen on the same night and not have to go to work in the morning.

  • Babulah

My dream at last! All 3 of my favorite shows in a row! Yippee for Fridays CBS! F-U NBC! If I had known that all it takes to keep a show on the air are fan letters and passion, I would have started earlier! I thought it was ratings! Silly me!

  • Stacey

NBC is a fool. It (Medium) does have more ratings than some of the other shows they saved. But on the other hand, it probably isn’t doing well because NBC is suffering and people are turning to other networks. I do think Medium will actually do better on CBS. Even on Fridays. Going after Ghost Whisperer. Two very similiar shows. Now, I have something to watch at 9 p.m. NBC will regret this like they will regret giving 10 p.m. each night to Jay Leno.

  • TwigLA

Congrats to CBS for picking up my FAVORITE show. NBC never promoted it and did a good job of hiding it from fans. Everything about that show, it’s cast, and writers is stellar.
Watch the Jeffrey Tambour episode before it fades into oblivion. Pure gold.
The Friday at 9 PM time slot will be great for it as a lead in to Numb3rs.

I have followed Medium for the last 5 seasons and really enjoy it. Even with Allison’s talents, the marriage portrayed is one of the most believable ones on TV.
With Medium and Chuck moving to Fridays, it is starting to shape up like Mondays have always been – too many of my favorite shows all on the same night – at least they have all survived. Thank goodness for Hulu, the TV websites, etc.

  • Michael

The only problem is for CBS. Putting this strongly written and acted show along side the crapfest that is Ghost Whisperer should make viewers realize how bad JLH is and how poorly written and uninventive the writers are. I’m very happy that this show will live on, as Patricia is immensely likeable.

Silverman has no middle ground. His moves are either visionary (sticking with shows like 30 Rock and letting them grow an audience, maybe the new Leno gig) or just crash-and-burn stupid (Knight Rider, letting Medium and Earl go elsewhere to flourish, and maybe the new Leno gig).
