For the first time, directors and writers for regular comedy series like The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live will compete in separate Emmy categories from those for one-time TV specials like the Academy Awards, reports Variety. Traditionally, writers and directors had been grouped together in general "Variety, Music or Comedy Program" categories.
To avoid overwhelming the prime-time Emmy Awards with more prizes, the announcements for the newly split Variety, Music or Comedy Series and Special categories will alternate between the main telecast and the un-aired Creative Arts ceremony. Meanwhile, in March, the Television Academy cut the "individual performance" category from all Variety, Music or Comedy programs — instead, nominees for Best VMC Series and Best VMC Special will include the respective programs’ hosts along with the producers.

But what about people who don’t host the variety series or specials? Just a funny one-off performance, well they’re screwed! Whitney Houston won one year for the Grammys that way!
