Simon West has signed on to direct the upcoming remake of The Mechanic, starring Jason Statham in the role originated by Charles Bronson, Variety reports. Original producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff are also on board. The 1972 film, about a hitman training his protege, begins filming this summer.

Statham is wasting his talent in the Crank films. This is certainly a beter road for him to take although no one can replace Bronson.

Do we really need another remake of a sorta cool 70s flick that’s only remembered for its great ending (here’s a hint: Jan Michael Vincent blows up!!!). Why can’t Hollywood concentrate on something new like http://www.pyramidsofmars, the coolest online graphic novel there is. It’s retro sci-fi fun that’s original – not a remake of a forgotten film.
