Impoverished 'Slumdog Millionaire' stars to receive new homes from Indian government

Categories: Movie Biz, Movies

The government of India said it will give the two impoverished child stars of Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire new homes, according to an Associated Press story on NYTimes.com. Rubina Ali, 9, who played the youngest Latika in the movie, and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, who played the littlest Salim, both lost their shanty homes earlier this month when Indian authorities demolished parts of the Mumbai slum they lived in.

"Slumdog Millionaire has won Oscar recognition," said an Indian government official. "We thought this would be a proper thing to honor these children acting in the film. It would be a good gesture on the part of the government." Apparently, the forthcoming homes — which are government apartments on the northern outskirts of Mumbai — will be available to the two children in the next day or two. Slumdog Millionaire filmmakers have also promised the stars new apartments, via a trust that was set up in their names.
