Reese Witherspoon's next project may be Fox Searchlight's 'Nice'
Fox Searchlight snatched the rights to Jen Sacks’ 1998 chic lit novel Nice with an eye for developing it as a project starring Reese Witherspoon, according to Variety. Witherspoon will produce the dark comedy, which centers on a magazine writer who accidentally kills her boyfriend and then decides she’d rather kill boyfriends than break up with them.
Sofia Coppola sets new movie, 'Somewhere,' at LA's iconic Chateau Marmont
Writer-director Sofia Coppola’s next film project, Somewhere, will be filmed and set at LA’s celeb-loving hotel Chateau Marmont, according to Variety. The Focus Features movie, which will be shot in June and July in both LA and Italy, is set to star Stephen Dorff (Public Enemies) and Elle Fanning (Phoebe in Wonderland). Dorff will play an excess-loving actor who is forced to reassess his life when his 11-year-old daughter (Fanning) arrives without warning. The project reunites Coppola with Focus Features, which she partnered with to make 2003′s well-received Lost in Translation. Sophia isn’t the only Coppola working on the project: brother Roman Coppola is producing and father Francis Ford Coppola is listed as an executive producer.
'Pooh's Heffalump Movie' writer tapped to pen 'Wanted 2'
Evan Spiliotopoulos, co-writer of Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, has been tapped to write Wanted 2, based on a story by Chris Morgan, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Like the original, which starred Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, the in-development sequel is based on the comicseries created by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones. Timur Bekmambetov,who directed the first film, is attached to helm the sequel.Spiliotopoulos mostrecently adapted the Dave Roman graphic novel Agnes Quill: AnAnthology of Mystery and also has The Last Call in development at Universal.
Sacha Baron Cohen's 'Bruno' dodges NC-17 rating
Brüno, the upcoming summer comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen, has received an R rating from the MPAA, Universal Studios announced. Last month, an earlier cut of the film—in which Borat creator Baron Cohen plays a gay Austrian fashion reporter who travels across America—was tagged with a more restrictive NC-17 rating, but upon viewing a new edit of the film, the ratings board gave it an R for "pervasive strong and crude sexual content, graphic nudity and language." Brüno will be released on July 10.
Miranda Tozier-Robbins arrested at Britney Spears' home
Los Angeles police arrested a woman Thursday morning who they say was caught peeking into the windows of singer Britney Spears’ Calabasas, Calif. home, according to the Associated Press. Miranda Tozier-Robbins, 26, who was wearing camouflage and toting a camera at the time of her arrest, was cited for trespassing and disorderly conduct and then released. According to other reports, Tozier-Robbins auditioned for the fifth season of American Idol in 2005, performing Spears’ ballad "Everytime."
Tozier-Robbins wrote about her American Idol audition experience on her blog Idol Fever Approaching. In her profile for blogger.com, which hosts her blog, she writes, "I have issues but I’m working on them. Other than that I likechillin’, listening to music, watching tv, and playing video games."
Kevin Smith to perform one-man show at Carnegie Hall
Writer-director-actor Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno) will perform a one-night show at New York’s Carnegie Hall this summer, according to Variety. Titled Silent Bob Speaks: An Evening With Kevin Smith, the planned three-hour performance will consist of Smith recounting stories and taking questions from the audience. The show is scheduled for June 17.
YouTube signs content deal with Hollywood studios
YouTube, which is owned by Google, has signed a content deal with several Hollywood movie studios, Reuters reports. Among the studios that will be offering free full-length films and TV shows on YouTube are Sony Pictures, CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz, and the BBC, according to the AP. Google, which bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006, hopes that the new Hollywood content will boost the site’s attractiveness to advertisers. YouTube’s main competitor is Hulu, a streaming-video website owned by NBC Universal and Fox.
'American Idol' tour set to start on July 5 in Portland, Ore.
The top 10 contestants from this season of American Idol will hit the road for a nationwide tour starting July 5 in Portland, Ore. The touring finalists will be Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Joy, Michael Sarver, and Scott MacIntyre, who will play in a total of 50 cities. 'Amazing Race' renewed for 15th season
CBS’s The Amazing Race will return in the fall for its 15th season, Variety reports. Once again, the reality competition program will be hosted by Phil Keoghan, who is currently biking across America to raise awareness for MS. The Emmy-winning Amazing Race continues to earn impressive ratings, averaging a little more than 10 million viewers per episode.
