R&B star Ashanti will make her stage debut this spring when she stars in the City Center Encores! Summer Stars production of The Wiz, which is scheduled to run from June 12 to July 5 in New York. Ashanti, who’s acted in such films as Coach Carter and Resident Evil: Extinction, will play the lead role of Dorothy, made famous by Stephanie Mills on stage and Diana Ross on film.

Isn’t she a little old for this? Stephanie Mills was a teen when she did the original stage version, whereas Miss Ross was too old in the movie version. And didn’t Ashanti already star in a Muppet version?
