The Supreme Court ruled today that the Federal Communications Commission can hit TV networks with massive fines for broadcasting even a single obscene word, Reuters reports. The 5-4 decision overturns a 2007 ruling by a federal appeals court, which held that the FCC’s recent crackdown on so-called "fleeting expletives" — including words uttered by Cher and Nicole Richie at the 2002 and 2003 Billboard Music Awards, both aired on Fox — had been "arbitrary and capricious." While the Supreme Court found that the FCC is in compliance with existing law, the networks may still go on to challenge the "fleeting expletives" policy on constitutional grounds if they so choose.
Talk about it on PopWatch:
Supreme Court to F-bombing celebs: Yeah, you probably shouldn’t have said that!

This is absolutely f*cking ridiculous.
This sounds kind of dumb.
I’m assuming this is only for FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC, etc.
Can they get rid of all the feminine hygiene and erectile dysfunction advertisements?
The Supreme Court has totally lost its collective mind. The idea that in the year 2009 we are still persecuting folks for their speech is an insult to the Constitution of the USA and to every american citizen. Europeans laugh at our censorship with the morbid fear of body parts and language that is commonly used EVERYWHERE in the USA. I defy the Supreme Court and will do everything I can to fight this ridiculos decision. Mark Montgomery boboberg@nyc.rr.com
So if a presenter or winner at an awards ceremony curses up on stage then the network will have to pay for the indecency? Why not file charges against the person using the inappropriate language?
Are your f**k*ng sh**ing me! How Dare those muther F*c*i*ng N***e*s Sh** on our F**k*ng rights!
I’m sorry, but isn’t this an infringement of my right to hear what I want to hear?! If you don’t want to hear what’s being said there are filters you can get for your TV, but I think the censorship is ridiculous. If you don’t like it get a filter, change the channel, or turn off your TV because you obviously aren’t grown up enough to deal with the programming anyway
Let’s all quit being so damn dumb as to use vulgar languge to show we don’t have any better command of English.
It is time we stopped the bathroom talk on TV and cable screens. Grow up.
We, as Americans, are given a freedom of speech and freedom of the press, if we’re being censored, it takes away those freedoms!!
Americans are just ignorant and stupid.
I applaud this decision for two reasons. I don’t enjoy hearing vulgar language in general and certainly don’t want to watch it on tv and expose it to my children. Also it shows that some people are willing to stand up for what is good and clean in this world, and there is not enough of that!
Not a big fan of the First Amendment to the US Constitution, eh, Stephanie? If you’re so concerned about your children being exposed to off-color language… shouldn’t you NOT expose them to it?? Isn’t that your job as a mother? Or do we have to have the supreme court your kids, too? Although I suppose if the supreme court can appoint George Bush in 2000, then they can invalidate the Constitution, too.

The SC didn’t discuss whether there was a violation of free speech. It left that issue up to the lower courts, which the SC will then later review.
