The Broadway musical, 9 to 5, based on the hit 1982 movie starring Dolly Parton, has earned a record 15 nominations from the Drama Desk, the Associated Press reports. The old record of 14 nominations was held by five other shows, including Hairspray. The score to 9 to 5 was written by Parton. The show will now compete for best musical of the year against Billy Elliot, Liza’s at the Palace, Shrek, The Story of My Life and Fela! The awards will be announced on May 17.

I reccomend everyone go see “Shrek” on Broadway instead of “Little Mermaid.” TLM’s costumes are terrible and the book is disappointing. “Shrek” is a much more professional production and has a funny story to it.
I agree with Andrew about “Little Mermaid.” Disney didn’t put too much effort into it only because they thought they were going to make lots of money out of it no matter what. The producers of “Shrek” made sure that the show was great. Big congrats to “9 to 5″ and the actresses in it like Stephanie J. block, Megan Hilty, and Allison Janney.
Wow…..14 nominations and I don’t even think it opens for a few days yet….ummm….okay.
I saw 9 to 5 in Los Angeles while they were still tweaking it last September, before it went to Broadway. One of the funniest, upbeat shows I have ever seen. I highly recommend this show.
BTW, EW, the film came out in 1980, not ’82.
This doesn’t surprise me one bit. Dolly Parton is one of the most gifted lyricists of the past century.
If there is a God in heaven, the horrible Allison Janney will NOT win for Best Actress in a Musical. The youtube clips I’ve seen of this show will help you loosen your bowels, that’s how bad it looks/sounds. How come 0 nominations for Next To Normal?
“Next to Normal” wasn’t eligible for any nominations because it received them last year when it was off-Broadway. And basing your opinions on a YouTube video? I’ve seen the show both in LA and in New York; Stephanie J. Block is by far the most gifted singer on that stage, but Allison Janney acts circles around the rest of the cast. 15 completely deserved nominations.
Just acorrection: the original movie came out in 1980, not 1982. Dolly Parton’s title song was nominated for an Oscar (it lost to “Fame”)
i completely disagree about the little mermaid. it was an absolutely wonderful show. its actually my favorite show that ive been to. the sets were breathtaking. While i understand peoples skepticism about the costumes, i thought they worked nicely. also the cast is wonderful at the stage door…very invested in its fans. i HIGHLY recommend the show!
Candice Mountjoy, it made no sense for the producers of TLM to have Carlotta and the maids look like big chickens.
