Universal is set to remake its 1983 thriller Videodrome. Original writer and director David Cronenberg is not currently attached to the project, which, according to Variety, will "modernize the concept [of the original film], infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller."

Awesome! Let’s take a masterpiece of 80′s horror and turn it into a modern day sci fi thriller! Goes to show you that Hollywood has no idea what the original was about. Without the subtext (which will obviously be lost from how they’re describing it) the remake is going to be utter crap!

Oh, my God. Just don’t do it. Don’t. This movie cannot be remade. Are they insane? Just leave it alone. I forget who it was, but someone once said that bad movies should be remade because you can improve them. But something perfect like “Videodrome” cannot be updated, improved or altered in any good way. So let it just exist for its maker and its fans and go do something original.
Re-doing Cronenberg is like playing russian roulette by yourself. It’s doing a paint by numbers Mona Lisa. Or driving your suziki in the left lane. The King’s Men filled out by the cast of the Mickey Mouse club. Or Macbeth with the crew of Gossip Girl.
To Whitey:
I haven’t watched Videodrome yet, but read many fascinating articles on it. Wasn’t the point of Videodrome more about how forms of media desensitizes us from horrific violence to the point of turning snuff into entertainment? Actually, that sounds more relevant now than the ’80s with the internet, but apparently, Hollywood’s description has little to do with Videodrome’s subtext. So yeah, this sounds like a bad idea, nonetheless.
To t3 hdow: That’s one of the many messages in the movie, yeah, but if done improperly that message can be too preachy, or you could just loose the message entirely and fall into the trap that the movie depicts. I suggest you watch it, the movie might be timelier now than it was then, but the movie still holds up well despite the cheesy 80′s technology (even the special effects still look amazing). I would rather they just released the original in theaters as if it was a new movie.

this is the worst news ever, videodrome is ONE OF A KIND. If you want to remake cronenberg, try THE BROOD. that might be fun with some new makeup. otherwise, STOP desecrating monuments.
