The legal battle that started earlier this year concerning indie band MGMT and President Sarkozy’s political party, the Union for a Popular Movement, has come to a close according to a statement released by the band on its website on Friday. After refusing the government’s initial response to pay the band a symbolic one-Euro fee and then threatening to sue, the band agreed to a settlement fee, which they will donate to artists’ rights organizations. The fact that the UPM was in the middle of a legislative battle against filesharing at the time it used the song only added to MGMT’s frustration since the statement reads the band members "believe that access to music benefits both the musicians and the fans."
