The Eagles' Don Henley sues GOP candidate over use of tunes

Tags:

CNN reports that The Eagles’ founder Don Henley has filed a lawsuit against a Republican U.S. Senate candidate for supposedly misusing two of his songs. The suit, filed Friday in a California federal court, claims Charles DeVore used "The Boys of Summer" and "All She Wants to Do Is Dance" without prior approval from Henley. DeVore posted YouTube campaign videos that used the tunes, according to the suit.

Ok, when will politicians learn not to do this. We hear this happening all the time. Can’t the GOP get a country star or something?

Not sure I understand… is Charles DeVore saying he is exempt from obeying the law and he can use copyrighted material however he wants, whenever he wants without permission?

It seems clear that Mr. Devore is acting illegally. Mr. Henley will serve him with a legal smackdown. Why do thses bozos continue to do this? Especially galling is the “new lyrics” inserted into Henley’s songs.

Kudos to Don Henley. Someone needed to take control over their own copywrites. Hope you win! Thanks for all the great music over the decades!

Go check your law books, kids. It’s parodic fair use specifically allowed by US copyright law.
Ask yourself: If Janeane Garofalo sang satirical lyrics to Ted Nugent’s “Cat Scratch Fever”, and put it up on YouTube, would you cheer Nugent suing her for copyright infringement? If so, the letter and spirit of the law mean less to you than your partisanship – and you’re subverting one of the very things that supports *your* right to free political expression.

I’m reminded of the law suit Nancy Sinatra had back in the 70′s which she lost. I’m all for Henley’s rights to the music/lyrics and hope that maybe this time around, the courts will protect the creative rights of artists and allow them just compensation. As for Chuckie, what can I say..he’s a politician and probably a lawyer too.
