Best Buy developing movie download service

Tags:

Retail chain Best Buy is in talks with CinemaNow and other online movie services to create a movie download offering that could launch as soon as this summer, Variety reports. The effort is aimed at offsetting falling DVD sales. Details are not yet available, but according to Variety, one possibility is that Best Buy would sell Web-enabled TVs and DVD players that include built-in access to an online movie service’s library and share in revenues generated fromdownloads or streaming from the content provider. Blockbuster partnered with CinemaNow in January and will roll out its downloadable offerings, available via set-top devices like TiVo DVRs and Blu-ray players, in the second half of the year. Amazon offers its video-on-demandservice through TiVo and Roku players, and Netflix offers its instantviewing service on those devices and others.
