Michael Sheen, the actor best known for playing Tony Blair and David Frost in the Oscar-nominated films The Queen and Frost/Nixon, has been added to the cast of the Twilight sequel New Moon. He’ll play Aro, the leader of the Volturi, director Chris Weitz confirms to The Daily Mail. The actor was "aggressively" pursued, Weitz added. "Michael’srole is so important because he’s the head of all vampires. Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, butbeneath that he is a tremendous threat." Sheen should be at home in the fantasy realm: He played the Lycan (or werewolf) Lucian in the Underworld films.

michael seems like he’ll be an awesome aro, no?
LOL from werewolf to vampire you have to love the irony. On that note I’m sooooo excited Micheal is in this movie, I loved him in the Undeworld films and he can really play the calm cool and creepy part of Aro really well. Keep it up Chris, you’re making me more and more excited for this movie!!!
Michael Sheen’s get is huge. As a lot of us Twilighters have always said, the Twilight story is more than what the critics were saying it is about. It’s not just a “teen” movie thing. It’s a very good love story but the characters are what brings the story to life. Aro is an extremely pivital character in the books and it’s being played by an Oscar nominated actor. Now will the critics admit they were wrong about Twilight. When this series can get an actor on board of his caliber, maybe it will finally open up your eyes. The books are really good. I can’t wait to see New Moon. Chris Weitz is living up to what he said he was going to give the fans. So far his casting is showing that he is keeping his word.
A casting masterstroke! I think he’s perfect for the part. I also believe that his credence will draw a new audience – those who might not necessarily have paid attention to a film of this genre before. It’s win win as far as I’m concered.
At least they’re paying him well.
Interesting choice! I never realized it was him in Underworld. I understand now why they chose him because I only thought of him in roles he played like in the Queen and Frost/Nixon
I think he’s an AMAZING choice. Another great decision by C. Weitz. The Twilight saga is an epic love story, and I have a lot of faith that Chris Weitz will bring the beauty of the story to the screen, in a way that will blow everyone away. (Unlike Catherine Hardwicke, who tried to make Twilight quirky/eerie, which is NOT what the story is.)
i thought it was going to be ben barnes…
this casting idea is an epic win.
I’m getting really excited for New Moon now…too bad Weitz wasn’t chosen to direct Twilight.
The producers have seriously up the ante with the addition of the very prestigious, very talented michael sheen. He will definitely do a great job as Aro. I’m so excited for this movie. Wished catherine directed but chris has definitely won me over with not just the addition of michael but also Dakota fanning as well. Chris is seriously making sure this movie is not just your typical sequel blockbuster, but a blockbuster with substance. Kudos to chris!!!
The perfect person to fit Aro’s character is Eric Ripert, the renown chef, too bad he is not an actor. Someone with his look would make a perfect Aro. Take a look for yourself!

Although i REALLY wanted ben barnes to be cast, I still really like Michael Sheen. Its kind of ironic that he played a werewolf and now is playing a vampire. Chris is making some very good casting choices. Except for choosing to keep Taylor Lautner. That baby-faced kid needs to go!
Can an almost 40-yr-old squee?!?! Because I just did when I read this headline. I lurve Michael Sheen and can so see him in this role; especially, with the Underworld series under his belt. Now I have more of a reason to see New Moon!
