'The Colbert Report' to air announcement of NASA space station module name

Categories: News, Television

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams will appear on Tuesday’s episode of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, at which time the space agency will announce the name of a new module in the international space station, the AP reports. An online contest had been held to let the public determine the name of the room, and Stephen Colbert encouraged his fans to vote for "Colbert"; it wound up beating out NASA’s suggestions, Serenity, Legacy, Earthrise, and Venture. In a statement, Colbert said, "I certainly hope NASA does the right thing. Just kidding. I hope they name itafter me."

The thing is…the rules stated that NASA still has the right to reject the winning name in favor of another one they choose. So stay tuned.

If NASA wusses out and doesn’t go with Colbert, given the other options I would hope they’d pick Serenity and appease the Joss Whedon fans. Because honestly, NASA is a big waste of money that could be better spent helping our country, so they might as well try to be entertaining, right?

Whatever. The people whining in this thread are just pissed off Firefly fans. I loved the show and the movie, but Whedon’s fans can be damn annoying sometimes.

SERENITY! That would be far more poetic and far less ridiculous. Come on people, seriously. the whole “Colbert” joke has gone on long enough. I love the guy as much as anyone but America’s next addition to it’s space station shouldn’t be named after a comedian. Even he doesn’t think so. (Now “The Jon Stewart”, at least that would sound more, I don’t know, intellegent and dignified)I’m sure it’s an honor just to be nominated, let it go…
    (Joss Whedon FOREVER! WHOO!)

The module should be called “Module 9874-A, Serial Number L804-3″

Colbert rocks! This is still a democracy, and the majority rules. If NASA wimps out and calls it Serentiy or Twinkle Star or some other BS name, then they don’t have the right to put the American Flag on it. Come on NASA — celebrate the power of the people!

If they didn’t want a rediculous name they shouldn’t have opened it up to the public at large.
You reap what you sow, and there have been numerous examples of this type of thing happening.
Personally, Im more disturbed that the geniuses at bloody NASA! wern’t smart enough to foresee this type of thing happening.

Colbert is great, i’m sure he could win the presidency if he was on the ballot for all 50 states – http://www.datemoviebuffs.com
