'American Idol': Quentin Tarantino will be guest mentor for movie-music week

Categories: Movies, Music, Television

Director Quentin Tarantino will mentor the seven remaining American Idol finalists for next week’s "Idols at the Movies" performance night. Tarantino was famously a guest judge on the third season of Idol. Next week’s results show will feature Oscar winner and former Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson and Hannah Montana: The Movie star Miley Cyrus as guest performers.

Okay, nothing against Tarantino, but why are they having him as a mentor again? Is he buds with one of the producers or something? I thought the point of the mentors was to have, you know, musicians give the kids advice. Does Tarantino have an album that I don’t know about? Seriously, I’m asking.

  • @Anne

Well, the theme is movie music, and QT is a filmmaker. Though it would seem to make more sense to have an actual musician, instead of a director. Surely they could’ve gotten someone who’s either written memorable songs for movies, or has sung them? The choice is a little weird, just as it was last time. Maybe he has a movie coming out soon.

The amazing Jennifer Hudson and the pathetic Miley Cyrus performing on the same show??
That is SO many ways of wrong that gives me hives.

  • Otis

REAL MUSICAL PERFORMERS/ARRANGERS/COMPOSERS please. This year’s Idols are bed enough without losing the opportunity to work with someone that can actually help their performances.

  • Tyre

Well, from what I can recall, his comments were concise and useful…as opposed to a seal clapping former lakers girl who shall remain nameless…

  • Nathan

Judging by the soundtracks to QT’s films, he’s a better judge of musical talent than any judge that lousy show’s ever had.

  • Nate

Hey, if there’s something that Tarantino knows how to do supremely well in films, it’s scoring. His soundtracks are always fantastic and filled with little known song gems, and the music always fits the film well.

  • sara

Jennifer Hudson should be the mentor. she’s enormously successful and she’s been in there shoes.

  • Ford

I am glad they are having him back.He was spot on last time and far better than a lot of mentors{who have a career in music},QT makes movies that are complete only with the music soundtracks added.GO ADAM LAMBERT!!!!

  • Big idol fan

He’s my favorite Idol guest judge ever – I think it’s a great idea

  • psychopomp

    EWWWWWWWWWWWW HANNAH MONTANA!

  • TorontoTom

When is Miley going to hit the rehab trail and GO AWAY?!? I can’t stand the fact that Idol has joined the pimping parade of her, furthering the perception that she has talent and should be heard. I’d rather have Megan and Scott back for a duet of Endless Love than have to suffer through Ms Cyrus. Ryan will be kissing her fat arse big time.

  • Kristen

I agree with ‘Big idol fan’- loved Quentin T as a judge many years ago! I know he’ll bring his enthusiasm for all that is AI to the show.

  • Jason S.

Quentin probably agreed because he wanted to bang Megan. Now he’s stuck with Lil and jailbait Alison

  • Marla

Tarantino was surprisingly one of my favorite guest mentors, so I’m looking forward to next week’s show. He really seemed into contributing to the process in a meaningful way and he took the task seriously. Maybe they can get rid of Paula for the week and he can be the fourth judge.

  • MsDaisy

Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus? One of these is supremely divine, the other one is Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus couldn’t even hold J-Hud’s microphone.

  • Bailey

Tarantino was entertaining the last time he mentored. In a way, I’m actually a little excited.

  • Missy

I’m very excited! Tarantino has superb taste in music and will certainly give helpful advice. And he can pimp Inglorious Basterds, too.

  • jason

ok i now have my homework assignment. we might as well go ahead and pick “my heart will go on” or “i will always love you” for lil. ok, maybe not. when she did “always” during hollywood week she was awful, so we’ll see.

  • LO

Tartantino is smarter than the average bear when it comes to to music. Only reason for this appearance is that he has a movie to promote.
Jennifer Hudson will not be live in studio.

  • ashley

go to http://adamordanny.blogspot.com if you like Adam Lambert or Danny Gokey :]

time for a celebrity name-drop…..a looong time ago -in a galaxy far, far away- the name of my video store clerk, in Manhattan Beach , CA was…Quentin Tarantino. This was in the mid-1980’s….he knew MORE about Movies, back then…than anyone I had ever talked to. I look forward to him being a guest judge on AI next week – for MOVIES week. He will be witty and honest – just watch and see.

  • hey tyre

Do people still judge you for what you did 20 years ago? Paula, although she sounds like she’s crying half the time, has had some of the more astute comments this season, as opposed to Randy “for me for you” Jackson, Kara “pretty pretty pretty” DioGuardi, and Simon “the only reason I’m still here is because I’m being paid astronomically” Cowell. So lay off my girl.

  • poprocksncoke

have to say, i’m quite pleased to see that tarantino will be a mentor this year. i thought he did a great job as a guest judge. the guy is genuinely a fan of the show, and personally, i think that gives him a slight edge as a mentor. you know he’s been watching these kids from day one, so he’ll know a pretty good deal about them. it’s about time idol did something right this year.

  • David Diachenko

Tarantino? Yes. Jennifer Hudson? Hell, yeah! Miley Cyrus? Give me a break!! Why does the entertainment keep validating and promoting someone who can’t sing, dance, act or hold a candle to any true or even half-true artist? Alas, that the undiscriminating masses keep the money machine rolling.

  • Nikki

So glad that Tarantino will be the mentor on the show. Maybe he can actually give the Idols some direction considering 1. he is a fan of the show and 2. he has amazing taste in music! Just listen to any of the soundtracks from his movies. This week should be great just for J-Hud and Tarantino.

  • Ms.D

Please, please please let Adam do Purple Rain next week!! And please, please, please, do not let Lil go anywhere near The Bodyguard or Titanic soundtracks! Wasn’t Family Affair in Undercover Brother (don’t ask me why I even remember that movie)? She might do ok with that! Maybe Quentin is coming to secure a movie role for Adam now, while he’s still available!

  • kellybelly

I don’t remember QT on season 3. Was that the year Fantasia won? What did QT do? I am drawing a complete blank. I guess I can kinda see it. But it just seems that a muscian who scores music would be more helpful. But who knows — it’s an entertainment show, not a competition. And Miley Cyrus?! I was so shocked when I saw her on the grammy’s. She’s really not a good singer. I was totally surprised. I expected her to be decent, what with all the hype. (this was the first time I saw her).

  • Joanie

I agree with MsDaisy. Miley Cyrus wouldn’t make top 36; why on earth is she on Idol AGAIN?????????

  • sickgirl

OMG! I loved Tarantino on season three! I have always thought they should bring him back.
