Demi Moore uses Twitter to help prevent fan's suicide

A "tweet" may have saved a Demi Moore fan’s life, CNN reported today. The actress, whose Twitter blog has some 380,000 fans, received an online threat from a woman who said she was "getting a knife, a big one that is sharp. Going to cut my arm down the whole arm so it doesn’t waste time." Moore responded to the grim statement with the comment "Hope you are joking." The unnamed 48-year-old woman’s suicide threat was traced to a San Jose, Calif., home, where she was taken into custody for a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation. Moore, who was in southern France where husband Ashton Kutcher is shooting the crime drama Five Killers, later informed her Twitter followers that the San Jose police were in control of the situation, and that she was "very torn about responding or retweeting that woman’s post but felt uncomfortable just letting it go."

    I don’t know what’s more pathetic – that woman’s cry for help, or Demi Moore using “Twitter” to interact with her fans.

    I don’t know what’s more pathetic.. Ted’s heartlessness or his judgmental nature.

  • Ross

    @c, Ted is simply pathetic.

    Actually, Ross and C, with regards to the woman’s cry for help, I mean “pathetic” in its true sense. Her situation is sad to hear about. I hope she gets the help she needs. With regards to Demi interacting with fans via Twitter, I mean pathetic in a much more sarcastic sense. I admit I don’t understand the appeal of Twitter; I’m one of the few these days whose life is so uninteresting I don’t need to update the rest of the world about what’s going on with me on a moment-by-moment basis. That a successful actress feels the need to do so is on one hand not surprising; many actors are by nature exhibitionists and crave attention. But on the other hand, it’s just, well – there’s that word again – pathetic.

    Ted does have a point, the fan was doing it for attention and regardless of her mental state there is nothing genuine about her actions. Whilst Demi shouldn’t really communicate via. a network, don’t celebrities complain about about having some privacy once in awhile? *COUGH*

    Sounds like another media setup by the folks at twitter. Every week in the news you hear something about that stupid twitter. I think they probably called up Demis agent, told them there was a “suicidal” woman who was going to off herself unless she twittered with Demi. Demi says yes, does a little twittering, the “suicidal” woman feels better, twitter makes the headlines again. I think this “person” was the marketing department. There is just too much media buzz about this stupid twitter. Listen to us media ….WE DONT CARE ABOUT TWITTER, SO START COVERING REAL NEWS STORIES LIKE AT INFOWARS!

    i agree with jo jo mama besser. Myspace and Facebook need to start ratcheting up there own media schemes. The next airplane crash passenger needs to be blogging about it from anything but Twitter.

    It was a judgment call on her part whether or not to do something. I think doing something was more human.
    To call CNN and Entertainment Weekly is irresponsible and will encourage other to make desperate cries for help through this vehicle.
    There are real mental issues here and to broadcast that someone who should be calling a therapist will get the publicity by seeking out a celebrity will have more people using this as the avenue for their last notes.
    I find it reckless Ms. Moore is seeking publicity for this any therapist/social worker who have told her this was the worst thing to do. Watch the tones of her emails/twitters change.
    She should hire a social worker to screen these.

    Maybe people should lay off the Zoloft pills and stop washing them down with fluoride tainted water as they tune into their favorite mind-numbing TV show. It then, might be possible, for people to think for them selfs, Utilizing basic human skills such as logic and reason. I know first hand, When I decided to get my head out of my ass, and my ass out of the matrix, I became an outsider looking in. And I am better for it, I mean, my physical and mental health has improved ten fold. Maybe yours could too!
