Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, has raised eyebrows with a post she wrote on her blog last Friday about a trip to Guantanamo Bay, the Associated Press reports. Mendoza, 22, had visited the infamous detention center for accused terrorists as part of a USO trip with Miss USA, Crystle Stewart. In her post about the trip, Mendoza described the terrain around the US naval base. "The water in Guantanamo Bay is sooooo beautiful!" she wrote. "It was unbelievable … I didn’t want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful." The post was taken down from her blog quickly, according to the AP, but a moment too late. The New York Times had already written about it on its website. The President of the Miss Universe organization, Paula Shugart, put a post on Mendoza’s blog saying that Mendoza’s comments "were in reference to the hospitality she received while meeting the members of the US military and their families who are stationed in Guantanamo."

I am from Venezuela, and this is just a shame.
This has been all over the world media since yesterday: TV, newspapers and the internet. I’m a regular on EW.com and I was almost grateful that you hadn’t said anything.
It’s gotten special attention down here. And by ‘down here’ I mean Venezuela. Yeah, that’s right: I’m Venezuelan. All I can say is that we’re EXTREMELY ashamed of these idiotic, unthoughtful, inconsiderate, tasteless and plain stupid comments.
This and chávez, that totalitarian chimp we have the misfortune of calling our President and who not-so-surprisingly is a lot like that chimp you called YOUR president until 71 days ago, inviting over to Caracas the war criminal that calls himself President of Sudan, who is allegedly responsible for what’s happenning in Darfur, unfairly make ALL of us as a nation look terrible.
We can only say we’re sorry. We’re really fighting to turn it all around.

A SLIGHT majority of 55% of the voters (which amounts to a mere third of the people registered and less than 6,5 million votes out of a total population of 28 million) consisting almost entirely of people like this, driven to such ridiculous extremes of fanatism and fundamentalism where they go as far as calling the totalitarian Hitler-esque f**k we have for a president a “messiah” (In my post in Spanish I said that the “party” led by the clinically-insane chávez is more like a religion, BTW) by the lethal combination of a failed, almost non-existant educational system, a profound lack of information and a state than practically lives on fact-twisting, is what’s leading our nation towards North Korea-like and Cuba-like destruction.
