'Project Runway' lawsuit settled; season 6 to air this summer on Lifetime

After being orphaned for almost a year due to legal deadlock, the sixth season of Project Runway has finally found a home: on Lifetime, where it will air this summer. "NBC Universal, The Weinstein Company and Lifetime have resolved their disputes," read a statement released today by NBC Universal, which owns Bravo, Runway’s home for five seasons. "The Weinstein Company will pay NBCU for the right to move Project Runway to Lifetime. All of the parties are pleased with the outcome." (When The Weinstein Co. announced last April that Runway would be movingto Lifetime, NBC Universal sued for breach of contract. Eventually, The WeinsteinCo. countersued NBC Universal for allegedly failing to properly promote season 5, and Lifetime then sued both parties.)

Also in a statement, Lifetime Networks President and CEO Andrea Wong said: "I couldn’t be more excited that Lifetime will bring its viewers anamazing, all-new season of Project Runway this summer. As thehighest-rated cable network for women, Lifetime is the perfect home forthis outstanding program as well as its companion series, Models of theRunway. All of us at Lifetime are thrilled to move forward with Heidi,Tim, Nina, Michael, The Weinstein Company and the entire Project Runwayteam."

As for Harvey Weinstein, the Bravo statement quoted him as saying, "’I want to personally congratulate [President and Chief Executive Officer of NBC Universal] Jeff Zuckerand NBCU on their success in the litigation and thank Jeff forresolving this in a professional manner. We look forward to workingtogether on our ongoing projects.’" And in a statement of his own, Weinstein looked forward to not only the next five seasons of Runway (on Lifetime), but also spin-off shows Models of the Runway and Project Pygmalion. "With these upcoming shows and the success of our new series The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on HBO, we are very excited aboutthe continued growth of The Weinstein Co’s television division," Weinstein said. "We arealso looking forward to working with NBC Universal on the upcomingtheatrical release of Inglourious Basterds and the continueddevelopment of other projects together."

Yeah, I’m glad they were able to ‘make it work.’ I just hope it doesn’t suck on stodgy Lifetime.

  • grammar fiend

“to properly promote” – ?? Missy, didn’t an editor or teacher tell you not to split infinitives? “to promote Season 5 properly” Just an FYI.

  • HC

Excuse me, but what is Lifetime?

  • Nikki

Well I love Project Runway and am happy that it will return, but I just don’t like the idea of having to tune into Lifetime to watch it. As a woman, I’ve made it a point to avoid anything on Lifetime so this will be tough for me. I was so hoping they would work things out with NBC so it would stay on Bravo. It’s their signature series!

  • heidisvenson

Actually grammar fiend, split infinitves are perfectly acceptable in English. The idea that they are not is a holdover from Latin language rules. “To promote properly” or “to properly promote” are equally correct.

  • RRozsa

All right! Finally it’s coming back!

  • RRozsa

to Grammarfiend – Actually, I had more of a problem with the alliteration (“properly promote”) — three syllables out of five starting with “P’s”…..

  • Jim

Who knew that watching gay men sew could be so compelling? I can’t wait for the new season.

  • Katja

Better not be an April Fool’s joke…I have serious Runway (and Tim Gunn!) withdrawal going on.

  • Janix

This marks the end of the Great Recession.
The Fashion Forward designs of Project Runway will reduce unemployment, lift the Dow Jones and reduce the Libor.
Tim Gunn will make us all work.
    Thank Heavens for Project Runway.

  • emerald

I so agree with you katja, I miss Project Runway.

  • Jen

Kind of upset that “Victim Television” will be airing Project Runway this summer. I was really hoping Bravo would still get to show it. I hate Lifetime *groans*

  • Michael

I am still in denial that Project Runway is moving to Lifetime. Being a gay guy, I have never watched anything on the Lifetime channel and probably never will. Bravo is my channel of choice.

  • Brenna

I miss PR but I hate Lifetime and its programming. Ugh. This show should have stayed on Bravo. I may not move with it. I think Weinstein et al need to know people won’t follow wherever they let the $$$ lead them.

  • Arty

    I love Project Runway! I can’t wait for this summer : )
I am a student at Boston U, taking an advertising class. We have to create an ad campaign for Sharpie markers. If you could take 5 minutes filling out this survey for consumer purchase, that would be AWESOME!

  • Elea

Guys, if you want PR to come back BUT you don’t care for Lifetime…
don’t let that get in the way of promoting PR, because if you don’t watch who’s to say that PR won’t be renewed for another season!!!!
I too am NOT a Lifetime viewer…such depressing movies…and boring to say the least.
BUT I am a PR fan and if it’s on, I’m going to watch.
Long live PR…no matter what…fan forever!!!

  • EntertainmentBlogger

Yeah…wish it was staying on BRAVO. But I guess I will turn the channel and tune in. Miss the show.

  • bob white

I didn’t know the show was gone. I mean really, do we really need it around?
Maybe a show watching the grass grow would be more entertaining?

  • claudenorth

Really, who cares what network airs it if you enjoy it?

  • carolina

I’m so ready for the new season, My tivo will record it independently of the channel.
    I’m so happy!

  • sharksfansd

Stopped watching Lifetime when the Golden Girls reruns went to Hallmark. I guess I will watch Lifetime again since PR will be on there. It is much cooler to say I am watching Bravo instead of Lifetime though. Kidding. Sort of.

  • Deanna_Mac

We’re down to the final 3 on Project Runway Canada. Iman is the hostess of the show…it’s helped fill in the void of Project Runway!

  • Heidi Klum

Who cares, Project Runway is so over. “Like fashion, one day you are in, the next day you are out”. – Carry on.

  • Bobo

Its about time.Ive been watching reruns.Seeing Tim Gun on a Tide Commercial and Heidi in the Guitar hero(directors cut) commercial aint so bad but just make it work.Hope season six is great

  • Kelly

What does it matter what channel it is on? If you people are so caddy that you won’t watch a show that you obviously like just because of who is airing it, you are ridiculous. As if people are going to come into your house and see the Lifetime logo on the bottom of the screen and instantly judge you. Maybe if you weren’t so quick to judge yourself, you’d realize that nobody cares what you watch but yourself. And if you find it so horrible to watch a show you’ve liked on Bravo because it is now on Lifetime, you have a lot more issues than a missing show in your tv lineup.

  • GoddessLu

Thank GAHD!! I’ve been have such severe withdrawal that even news of the near Kenley Penley’s cat scratch fever fight was something…much as I loved to hate her. Slightly curious as to how it will be, being (a) in California and (b) on Lifetime but the show is the show and thus, I will go to LT to watch it, and none of the other dreck.

  • Andrea From KC

I Hate that its going 2 B on Lifetime now…. Lifetime isn’t a HD channel here but Bravo is…. Sux 2 watch regular TV now

  • Melinda Young

The lawsuits are dreadful! Project Runway is an important contribution to the creativity for people who love to sew and find fine workmanship an important element in thier finished garment. The cut throat antics of participants are deplorable and shameful. Not funny to me. But the inovative designs and the dedication to hard work and the originality shown are truly awe inspiring. I have missed the show all be happy to have it back. Hopefully with (at least) civil contestents.Tim and Heidi rock!

  • CB

Bravo was the right venue for Runway. Lifetime for Women. Yuck. Weinstein cares only about money. He’s so gross.

  • To Kelly

To Kelly: People do care what channels they watch, even if that makes no sense to you. Runway will now have commercials advertising Lifetiime’s programming, like Kate Jackson as a killer nurse, or Jane Seymour as a struggling single mom. YUCK. Based on your post, I think you work for Lifetime. Oh, and by the way, the word is “catty.” A caddy is someone who carries your golf clubs.
