In a radio interview this morning with Phoenix station KISS, American Idol judge Paula Abdul revealed that next week’s performance-night theme will be Songs From the Year You Were Born. That means we’ll hear songs ranging from 1980 (Danny Gokey) to 1992 (Allison Iraheta), with a whole bunch of tunes from the 1984-86 period, when six of the nine remaining finalists were hatched. (If you click the above link to hear the interview, she spills the beans at the 12-minute mark.) A rep for the show says the theme will be officially announced during tonight’s results show.

I wonder if this will allow Adam to channel his inner Steven Tyler?…although he could probably rock Axl Rose too
Adam is totally going to do “Don’t Stop Believin’”
Hoping Allison does Smells Like Teen Spirit or “Damn I Wish I was Your Lover.”
1980 – 1992…wow, i feel like a senior citizen!
Would love to hear Allison sing something from Annie Lennox’s ‘Diva’ album – so many great songs to choose from.
I completely agree on Damn, I wish I was your Lover for Allison. I’d also love to see her do “My Loving (Never Gonna Get It)by En Vogue.
And can we please get some Hall and Oates “Maneater” and then will one of the contestants eat Kara.
oh yeah…I can definetely hear Allison rocking out to the Eurythmics’ would I lie to you…oh shoot forget it 1993…
I’d give my right arm to hear Adam perform a Led Zeppelin tune! Too bad he wasn’t born the year that “Immigrant Song” was released…it would slay, slay, slay everyone in the Western Hemisphere – if he upped the ante on Robert Plant’s classic vocals! “Ahh-A-Ahh- AHH! Ahh-a-Ahh-AHH! Valhalla, I am coming!” (grin)
Haha, you all assume Danny and Allison will still be there. (I hope, though)
Someone needs to do “Life in a Northern Town” by Dream Academy. It was 1985. Danny, Adam, or even Kris would be awesome with it. Could also be good for someone that wants to change up their image…
Should be a great week. There are so many good songs to pick from, not as many as the 70′s. but I agree w/Arryana I feel ancient. Rock it out Adam next week. No matter what you sing it will be original. Oh by the way Zach, Danny will be there.
Thank god, I was worried it’d be another sad sponsor tie-in like last night’s “iTunes’ most popular downloads.” At this recap (squareeyes.blinkx.com/2009/04/american-idol-recap-fashion-hair-outshine-top-9) we predicted “Songs you sing in a FORD FOCUS” or “COCA COLA Jingles”
@cobagibu – YES! I’ve always wanted someone to sing that on the show!
My picks for what the contestants should sing (feedback please!):
Adam Lambert: Rosanna (Toto)
Lil Rounds: Drive (Cars)
Scott MacIntyre: We Are the World (USA For Africa)
Matt Giraud: Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears)
Allison Iraheta: All That She Wants (Ace of Base)
Danny Gokey: While You See a Chance (Steve Winwood)
Anoop Desai: Take My Breath Away (Berlin) or Overjoyed (Stevie Wonder, and he already did it if I remember correctly)…he might actually have trouble finding the perfect song
Kris Allen: Power of Love (Huey Lewis and the News) (also not sure for him, but he can easily take a lesser song and strip it bare)
Oooooh, Adam would have been great on Don’t Stop Believin’ except for the fact they already did it tonight as the group number.
Yeah, Leigh H., I agree, would like to hear him sing Led Zepplin.. I mentioned that on the predictor forum last night. I thought he should choose something from them or Queen, or Aerosmith, Bon Jovi. I love 80′s and early 90′s music, I was born in 1979, so that’s my music!
