T.I. sentenced to one year and a day in prison

As expected, Atlanta rapper T.I. (born Clifford Harris Jr.) was sentenced today to one year and a day in prison following his October 2007 arrest for federal weapons charges, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Under the plea agreement, T.I. could reduce his time behind bars by 15 percent with good behavior. T.I. is scheduled to report to prison in the next six to eight weeks, though the judge described previously agreed-upon commitments that would not allow him to enter prison before May 19.

'Hell's Kitchen' and 'Mental': Fox fills out summer schedule

Fox officially announced more programming plans for this summer: New medical drama Mental, which follows an unorthodox doctor (Chris Vance) as he battles with his conservative boss, will launch Friday, May 22, at 9 p.m., while another installment of the Gordon Ramsay-hosted Hell’s Kitchen sets fire on Tuesday, July 21, at 8 p.m.

The rest of Fox’s summer line-up was already announced: Hit So You Think You Can Dance returns with a two-night, four-hour premiere on Thursday, May 21, and Wednesday, May 27, at 8 p.m. New episodes of the network’s two game shows—Don’t Forget the Lyrics and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?—begin May 22 and July 3, respectively. And finally, the Teen Choice Awards airs August 10.

Ricky Gervais to write, produce, and direct Sony's 'The Men at Pru'

The U.K. Office star Ricky Gervais will co-write, produce, and direct coming-of-age tale The Men at Pru for Sony, according to Variety. Stephen Merchant, who worked with Gervais on The Office and Extras, among other projects, will join him on the movie, which centers around a group of men working in insurance in the 1970s. Gervais will appear in a supporting role. Production is slated to begin this summer.

Queen Latifah to star in rom-com 'Just Wright'

Queen Latifah has signed on to lead Fox Searchlight’s romantic comedy Just Wright, according to Variety. The story revolves around Latifah — whose other romantic comedy credit is 2006′s Last Holiday — as a physical therapist who helps a basketball player recover from an injury and falls in love with him along the way. The project was in development at Disney for the past six years before being picked up by Searchlight. Filming is expected to begin in May.

Courtney Love sued by Boudoir Queen designer

Dawn Simorangkir, the designer behind the Boudoir Queen clothing and accessory line, filed suit Thursday against former Hole singer Courtney Love, according to E! Online. Simorangkir called herself "the latest victim of Love’s volatile personality, hair trigger temper, and malicious and tortious behavior." After refusing to pay for more than $4,000 worth of Boudoir Queen couture, Love slandered Simorangkir on the designer’s Etsy.com page and made comments about the designer being a cocaine dealer, embezzler, racist, and homophobe. Simorangkir is asking for unspecified damages.

'The Chopping Block': NBC pulls the plug on cooking show

NBC announced its new cooking reality competition The Chopping Block will be pulled from the schedule, effective immediately, according to Variety. The series debuted March 11 to 3.8 million viewers and, by its most recent episode this past Wednesday, had dropped 32 percent to 2.6 million viewers. Block‘s Wednesday at 9 p.m. timeslot will be filled by repeats of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (which currently airs new episodes on sister-cable network USA) instead. NBC said it hopes to bring the show back at a later date.

Stone Cold Steve Austin joins 'The Stranger'

Wrestlier-turned-actor "Stone Cold" Steve Austin will star in The Stranger, an action-thriller to be directed by Rob Lieberman in Vancouver this summer, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Austin has just completed principal photography on Damage, a fight film costarring Walton Goggins and produced by Nasser Entertainment Group and Caliber Media Co. — both of which companies will also produce The Stranger. Austin is a six-time WWF Champion and the only man in WWE history to win the Royal Rumble three times.

'Slumdog Millionaire' scribe signs on for animated film

Simon Beaufoy, who won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar last month for writing Slumdog Millionaire, has turned his attention to a scriptfor DreamWorks Animation’s Truckers, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It’s early in the process, so nothing is known about film’s plot yet. Recently, entertainment blogs were abuzz with rumors that Beaufoy was going to pen Wolverine 2; Beaufoy’s manager said the writer was approached by Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner to gauge his interest, but no formal offer was made. Ultimately, Beaufoy decided he wasn’t right for the project.

Taye Diggs sinks his teeth into 'Dead of Night'

Taye Diggs (Private Practice) has signed on to play the head of a vampire family in the supernatural horror movie Dead of Night, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Diggs joins a cast that includes Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Anita Briem (The Tudors), and Sam Huntington (Fanboys). The film, currently shooting in New Orleans, is adapted from the Italian comic series Dylan Dog.

Discovery to air 'Stephen Hawking's Universe'

Discovery Channel will debut a Planet Earth-like miniseries that goes to space, according to the Hollywood Reporter. StephenHawking’s Universe will explore the physicist’s theories and — with the help of computer-generated imagery — attempt to explain the mysteries of the Milky Way and beyond. The network is targeting a 2010 release.
