David Letterman marries longtime girlfriend

David Letterman announced during a taping of tonight’s Late Show that he and his longtime girlfriend, Regina Lasko, were married last Thursday in a small town in Montana, reports the Associated Press. Lasko and Letterman have a five-year-old son, Harry. The host said he began dating Lasko in 1986, and joked that in staying unmarried for so long he was the "last of the real gunslingers."

Cameron Diaz in final talks to star in rom-com 'Swingles'

Cameron Diaz is finishing negotiations with Paramount Pictures for the starring role of an assertive woman who helps a bachelor meet single women in the romantic comedy Swingles, reports Variety. The male role is not yet cast in the film, produced by Kevin Misher (The Interpreter, this summer’s Public Enemies) and written by Duncan Birmingham and Jeff Roda.

Anne Hathaway to play Judy Garland on both stage and screen

Oscar-nominated actress Anne Hathaway will play Judy Garland in stage and screen adaptations of Gerald Clarke’s 2001 biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland for the Weinstein Company. According to a statement released by the Weinstein Co. today, Clarke’s book "portrays the dramatic highs and lows of the cultural icon’s life — from her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days." The Weinstein Co. has optioned both the stage and film rights, but there is no start date yet for either production, nor is there a director or writer.

Robin Williams recovering after heart surgery

Robin Williams is due to make a complete recovery within the next eight weeks after having undergone heart surgery on March 13, according to a statement released by his publicist. "Mr. Williams’ operation went extremely well and we expect him to make a full recovery," said Cleveland Clinic staff cardiothoracic surgeon A. Marc Gillinov. "The 3-1/2-hour heart surgery was conducted to replace his aortic valve, repair his mitral valve, and correct his irregular heart beat."

Williams, whose comedy show "Weapons of Self-Destruction" had to be postponed until the fall, said in a statement, "The professionals at the University of Miami Hospital and ultimately at the Cleveland Clinic were all fantastic. I can’t thank them enough for their kindness and dedication while I was in their care. I must also thank all the people who have expressed their love and concern for me. I have been deeply touched by their support. I got some great new material for the tour and can’t wait to get back on the road. I’m thinking the next leg of the tour will be ‘Weapons of Self-Destruction and Reconstruction!’"

Roseanne Barr plotting primetime return with family comedy

Roseanne Barr could be returning to primetime. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she’s joined forces with one of her former Roseanne producers, Caryn Mandabach, to develop a family comedy that has been pitched to Fox. Jim Vallely (Arrested Development) will pen the script. Barr would executiveproduce with Mandabach, Vallely, and Maggie Rowe. Last year, EW marked the 20th anniversary of Roseanne with an oral history of the show.

'United States of Tara' showrunner quits

United States of Tara‘s executive producer Alexa Junge is leaving the Showtime series, which was just renewed for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Junge (Friends) ran the day-to-day operations of the critically acclaimed Tara, which was created by Oscar winner Diablo Cody and chronicles the family life of a woman with Dissociative Identity Disorder (Toni Collette). No replacement has been named yet.

Nicholas Hughes, son of Sylvia Plath, commits suicide

Forty six years after his mother, iconic poet Sylvia Plath, committed suicide by gassing herself, her son, Nicholas Hughes has also taken his own life. After a battle withdepression, reports The Times Online, Hughes, 47, who had most recently worked as a professor at the University of AlaskaFairbanks,hanged himself in his Alaskan home.  “His lifelong fascination with fish and fishing was a strong and shared bondwith our father (many of whose poems were about the natural world)," said his sister, Freida Hughes, in a statement. "He was aloving brother, a loyal friend to those who knew him and, despite thevagaries that life threw at him, he maintained an almost childlike innocenceand enthusiasm for the next project or plan.”

Coen Brothers will adapt 'True Grit'

Joel and Ethan Coen’s next project will bring True Grit back to the big screen, but their adaptation will stay truer to the Charles Portis book than to the 1969 movie that won John Wayne an Oscar, Variety reports. That means the remake will focus more on the 14-year-old girl who, in Portis’ novel, tracks her father’s killer in Indian territory along with a U.S. marshal (whom Wayne played in the original) and a Texas ranger. They’ll tackle True Grit ahead of another adaptation on their docket, Michael Chabon’s The Yiddish Policemen’s Union.

Ventriloquist Jeff Dunham signs with Comedy Central

The highest-grossing standup in North America, ventriloquist Jeff Dunham, has signed an all-encompassing deal with Comedy Central that includes a series order, another standup special, a DVD release, and merchandising, reports Variety. Dunham’s 2008 standup special was the most-watched show in the cable net’s history. Production for six episodes of a comedy series is scheduled to begin this summer, for an early 2009 air date.

One of two Steve McQueen biopics slated for this fall

Screenwriter Jesse Wigutow has scored a seven-figure deal to pen the screenplay for a biographical treatment of Steve McQueen, based on the Marshall Terrill biography Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel. Producers Michael Cerenzie (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead) and Christine Peters (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days) are looking to nail down a director and a star intime for a fall production. Another McQueen-centered film, based on a memoir written by McQueen’s first wife, is also in the works, according to THR.com.
